Funny enough the whole 'prolonged sickness' thing felt a little "over the top" before I had an experience like that myself, until I had to go through that with a family member. Something about that bit makes it not so fake - the anger, trying to find the blame others for your loved one not getting better and that utter feeling of sheer terror when you have to stay with them and waste away not to mention the utter repulsion upon seeing your loved one's body becoming more and more sick. Hopkins got that right somehow.
Still Jack has a lot of bad points, there are these storylines that actually make you go "Well it's not so bad."
