A movie has to have very bad acting or production, to fail for these reasons in the box office.
People must go see it first, and then say 'oh the actors didn't do a good job in this one'. Word of mouth on bad acting, isn't enough to make a movie bomb at the box office.
It's how well or badly the movie was promoted that keeps people from going to see it. A lot of people distanced themselves from the Ghostbusters because of the backlash, and because nobody wanted to see that.
The actors and actresses of this film themselves weren't bad. They didn't do a bad job, well, maybe except the gorilla... God, she was atrocious. Paul Feig isn't a bad director either, he's just mediocre.
Ghostbusters failed because of the hostility it created and for that, Amy Pascal is at fault.
