There are some things that aren't fair about this article. Sure some ideas have been touched on and not developed, but a lot of other ones have. It ignores the massive amount of exploration there's been into Pearl's character, and her obsession with Rose and how unhealthy it is. There's been a lot of exploration into Amethyst and her self confidence issues and problems with her self image. The show introduces lots of ideas, and has done a lot with many of them, and will likely explore other ideas that it's introduced more thoroughly in the future.
The thing is about Steven Universe, it's not a show about child soldiers fighting in a war. The biggest misunderstanding of this is that Steven Universe IS very different from a lot of other "Kid becomes the only hope to stop an intergalactic war" stories. Steven Universe is a slice of life show about a kid who gets roped into one of those stories. All of that is going on, but it's not what the show is ABOUT. The show is about Steven, and all aspects of his life. Being part of this huge intergalactic conflict is only part of it. But there's more. His dad is is important, his friends are important, Beach City is important. And as the show's moved on, the focus has moved more and more away from Beach City life and random gem missions, and has grown more focused on the intergalactic gem conflict, as it becomes a steadily more important and all-consuming part of Steven's life (but it's still by no means all of his life).
And hey, you don't have to like it. That's fine. The show is INCREDIBLY slow paced, deliberately so, and if the very slow paced slice of life stuff doesn't do it for you, that's okay! There's a reason most shows don't focus on this aspect of character's lives. But that doesn't mean it's filler, or bad writing. That just means this isn't the show for you.
