Just cause he's a boy doesn't mean he has Traditionally masculine traits
Nothing he does is masculine
He's pretty much the anti male hero
-Instead of being hot blooded he's emotional
-Instead of it being his will that lets him fight on, its his feelings of understanding
-Instead of his coming of age story to become a man, his journey will ultimately lead him into becoming a woman
Also a common theme among boy heroes in coming of age stories is that they already have a low opinion on the world around them (whether it is fear or hate)
Steven however loves the world around him, and his journey is to keep his innocent view on the world
Lets not forget Steven isn't a character who acts, he tags along all the craziness and is passive in the situations, where other male heroes can be put in that situation too they are the one who try to control their situation. Their hot blooded spirit would not allow them to go with the flow.
