People like Bendis and those like him are literally playing things as safely as possible. Repeating the same old formula because it worked for them the first time.
There is a reason like old Cosmic Marvel. It brought something new to the table. Apart from Stalin, no one really based their comics in the cosmic aspect of the Marvel universe outside of FF-related books.
Annihilation and the saga that came after it, shook everything up. Characters like Nova, Annihulus and Star Lord started to take center stage. And you have to keep in mind, they were not major characters. They were actually exceptionally minor ones. And Abnett managed to make all of them hold a setting for years.
He also changed the entire setting of the Cosmic Universe and had it become a lot more Grim and Dark, although he never went overboard.
Moore has always favored originality. His comment about Miracleman and Watchmen was that he had hoped it would cause writers to think about the characters. For as he pointed out, Miracleman, was a pretty bland character, yet Moore had turned his story into an epic story of a man becoming a god.
Moore's hope was that it would inspire future writers to go outside the box with their work and he expressed disappointment that he is one of the people who is responsible for the Dark Age of Comics.
