Amethyst's dialogue, coupled with Sour Cream's apparent age and the degree to which Greg has aged since the flashback seem to indicate that Marty stuck around at least for a little while.
Most likely, he walked back to Beach City, rather than trying to go the miles to Empire City, and shacked up with Vidalia while he tried to talk some sense into Greg like an actual manager.
Likely thought the whole fling would blow over.
Meanwhile, he got to stay with a sexy punk and probably plow her every night.
But then Sour Cream happened and Marty skipped town completely.
Otherwise, Amethyst's remark of "You ever get in contact with Farty Marty" and her ability to shapeshift into him wouldn't make sense. She wouldn't be that familiar from just a secondary story.
