The Thousand is a sentient swarm of spiders operating in NYC that is pretty much an urban legend of how people who don't know jack about Spider-man allegedly describe Spider-man. The host mind is losing its sanity d to the spiders and will soon be just a bunch of bugs in mind, body, and soul; so it decides to come out to the public in order to ask for help.
Of course this is grotesque as fuck and Spider-man kicks the shit out of it. So it decides it needs to do this in a private way. It needs to look like a good guy.. So it comes down to taking on a physical host shell. It tries to make sure the shell isn't innocent, it finds someone the Punisher is planning on putting down and horrifically consumes the crook's insides, leaving behind the skin bag until Frank is gone.
Then it shambles like the Roach in Men In Black to the Avengers Tower so it can ask for help. Hank Pym is able to discern the Thousand was made up from the spider that originally bit Parker, and he is able to make a helmet for speaking to spiders so that The Thousand doesn't have to be inside a human husk.
Or something.
