So is My Hero Academia basically the ultimate conculsion of Mutants and Marvel? Y'know barring the typical Mutants or measures to destroy Mutants bring about the apocalypse?
Are there any X-runs or even /co/ related material that's similar to Hero Academia?

Actually, the setting of MHA is a borderline post-apocalyptic one. When Quirk users first started appearing, non-quirk humans rejected them in large numbers, saying they needed to be controlled, pointing out the massive disasters and death tolls they were causing, etc.

Then there were wars, chaos, the near fall of civilization, shadow governments controlled by powerful Quirk users, until, eventually, the Quirk-using humans were just about all that was left. Peace through near-extinction of 'regular' humans.

There's a reason almost everyone expresses a Quirk and not having one is considered a genetic throwback in the current day setting. It's because regular humans were genocided.

So really, Quirk users and Mutants would get along great!

MHA is what happens when Magneto is right. Total Chaos at one point that set back Civilization by hundreds of years. It explains the disparity between super advanced combat robots, super science inventors and mundane looking tech available to the public at large.

Still, it is a waaay better outcome than some other futures from the Marvel or DC Universe.

But the setting still has its quirks, it is forbbidden to use one's power in public without a license, being a hero is sort of like a Job/Idol, with the Idol parts being more toned down than the one in Tiger & Bunny. While it is regulated by the government, so far it seems far more honest than the one from One Punch Man.

Because everyone is on equal ground not everyone are heroes. Some quirks are not suitable for combat unless exploited, like the protags Mom who has a telekinetic pull over small objects.

The first villain snatches the purse of a woman that makes force fields around herself, lots of people are around but no one wants to put themselves in danger.

Because not all quirks are useful in a fight, and it takes years of training and practice to make full use of one's quirk.

Supervillains that have dangerous quirks and practice using them to the point where they become really dangerous are countered by superheroes who do the same thing, while the Police tend to have less powerful quirks, but handle all the usual duties the police in the real world do. Essentially, Superheroes are a semi-autonomous SWAT organization that work with the Police, patrolling and taking out villains on their own when they pop up, and teaming up/strategizing with the police in the face of large numbers of villains working together.

Also, this is a byproduct of the semi-post-apocalyptic nature of the setting. Governments were in tatters, unreliable, or even completely suborned by villains for decades, or even centuries. Superheroes very likely rose up in that chaos to defend those who couldn't defend themselves, particularly when the police weren't strong enough, or even existent, to do so.

Now that civilization has largely recovered, things are much more regimented and regulated, but the Hero probably has a strong enough place in society's heart that getting rid of them entirely is unthinkable.

It's exactly like an American version of My Hero Academia or rather, MHA is a japanese version of Sky High. Down to the protagonist having no actual Superpowers at the start.

I don't think it's ever explicitly laid out, but it's pretty easy to infer. Using your quirks isn't forbidden, so long as it doesn't break any laws that are already in place, but using them for anything but tiny little things is pretty heavily frowned upon, it seems like.

At least, in public spaces. It's probably a case by case on what's polite in workplaces, private businesses like bars or restaurants, etc. But big flashy uses that would make other people nervous would probably be pretty heavily frowned upon, at the very least.

Bakugou was usually smart enough to not go around making explosions in public where anyone but his friends/Deku would see them, and those he did were probably just little ones for 'emphasis' and whatnot.

It's probably a really complex set of etiquette over what is and isn't acceptable to do where with your Quirks, but the general guideline is 'don't be a jerk, keep it in your pants'.

MHA is a society where people with powers have been around for so long, and become so widespread and normalized, that teenagers attending SUPERHERO SCHOOL...call each other by name, just like any other teenager, rather than awkwardly calling each other by codename all the time. Likewise with anyone familiar with a professional Hero, their Hero names being more of a 'Stage Name' than a 'code name', because nobody has a secret identity (other than a few villains trying to hide who they are from the authorities).

The only setting I can think of remotely similar would probably be Top Ten, which has a similar setting in many ways, or maybe Astro City to a much reduced degree.

Yes, Top Ten and Astro City are probably the closest ones in that like MHA and a couple other cape based manga, the superheroes and villains are allowed to impact the world in a lasting way. So the super scientist that makes a flying car actually has that car go into production, for example, instead of him having the only prototype because "status quo! flying cars don't really exist in real life!"

I miss the 2001 era DCU Metropolis where it was allowed to be a futuristic city because of an alien virus.

the main girl had plant control powers.
there was this goth/punk chick who turned into a gerbil, a black nerd kid who melted into a puddle and a kid who glowed.
the main villain was the popular chick who was a technopath who used to be Will's parents enemy before she got deaged and hated the hero school for sorting her into sidekick class because there wasn't a lot of tech when she went there.

that's been a given for a long time now.

The real point of interest in this series, for me at least, is at what point Midoriya becomes able to use his power without completely shredding his body in every fight. We've seen him make some progress here, but he's destroying his body far faster than he can master One-For-All.

I think he was pretty beefy at first but a serious injury really messed up his insides and he's essentially slowly dying from his wounds which is the reason he's super skinny and sickly looking in his "normal" form. His All Might appearance is just him flexing his muscles or something.

It's not so much 'genocided' as normal humans were less fit to survive than quirk users. Genocide implies there was a definitive effort to purge humans. Over time anyone who didn't have any natural protections died off. Now if you're rich and have an army of goons to hide behind you'll be find but the average person is gonna get killed off so any human that survives has something going for him. So either he was a human nabbed by a quirk user as a good mate orhe was a quirk user who managed to breed.

Like, if it's set in 2166, are there times characters refer to violent conflicts of the past? Like, the Resource Wars of the 2070s, or the Eugenics War of the 2090s, or the Purity Wars of the 2130s, etc. Conflicts that fill out the time gap, basically.

It's kind of sad that BHA "gets" how evolution would actually work so much better than the X-comics that have had it as their core for decades.

For one thing, it gets that having a Quirk is a genetic adaptation, and humans with Quirks are STILL HUMAN, rather than this whole 'separate species' bullshit in the X-books.

(Yes, yes, I know about the celestials and genetic tampering and all of that jazz, I've read them for decades, but seeing geneticists in the marvelverse make such incredibly dumb statements and sweeping generalizations over and over hurts me, too.)

What the "apocalypse anon" is saying is true, but it also isn't, generally speaking what happened is:

-The current comics take place I "think" around 2030? 2035? With about 80% of the global human population possessing some sort of super power.

-BEFORE any of that though people began giving birth to children with "quirks/superpowers" with the first being born in china.

-They were random and some were more explicit than others but these births became more and more common over time to the point where they out numbered normal births as they do today.

-The point of conflict though came when people who were born with a quirk that also entailed a physical mutation: some of these were explicitly graphic and dramatically changed the appearance of people.

-People became extremely xenophobic and afraid of "weird" or otherwise freaky looking quirk havers due to them potentially ruining human genetics; not straight up genocide, but people wanted them gone or at the very least not passing down their weird physiology.

The hate wasn't 100% targeted towards quirk users it was largely targeted towards the mutant looking ones or otherwise "degenerate humans".

A fellow fa/tg/uy! I've actually been working on my own capeshit world using /tg/'s hero generals as support.. When they're not too preoccupied with their own little project.

Basically the premise is:

-In 1930 people began giving birth to babies possessing superpowers: they were considered the "lost" generation though as many babies didn't survive the initial due to many of the powers and abilities being so diverse, dysfunctional and chaotic.

-1933-1956 is roughly the period of "cliche golden age to silver age comic book theatrics."

-It wasn't until the 1960's that superpowered births began to finally peek and normalize with trends and consistency generally settling in.

-1960's-1990 was the period spent "assimilating and the normalizing" super-powered people into modern societies.

-The present day is 2016 and 86% of the world has some sort of super power either via natural birth, environmental osmosis or activated through gene therapy.

And with that said I'm having a hard time deviating it from BOKU NO HERO ACADAMIA other than it taking place in Canada as opposed to >Japan<

Though, I'm under the impression that the appeal ideally would just be to gradually explore this fantastical world: everything down to the mundane to the marvelous through the eyes of relatable and interesting characters, so I'm not worried about that at least.

Bakugou sees Deku as just this constantly embarrassing piece of shit and what's worse is that he sees him as sort of an indirect insult to himself: The more Deku succeeds at what HE himself wants to do the less he thinks of himself because he's supposed to be -amazing-

Bakugou has always exceeded at whatever he's done: he has an amazing quirk that he respects and utilizes, he's intelligent and a good student and he's overall an amazing individual... Not personality wise. Baku is INCREDIBLY self-centered and EXTREMELY petty.

At a later point when Deku starts using his "All for one" quirk Bakugou is just, he's just furious because he has NEVER seen Deku use his quirk before and due to how self-centered he is he thinks Deku's been LYING to him this entire time. Especially because of how AMAZING Deku's quirk is.

Several reasons. A Inferiority complex combined with a massive ego and short temper but the core of it that noone ever mentions is that as far as Baku can tell Kiku has been hiding patronizingly hiding his quirk all along.

It's like that Buu Saga Goku Vs Vegeta fight. Vegeta was feeling all great about being able to have a proper fight vs Goku and then it turns out he was hiding Super Saiyan 3 all along. It comes off as a "fuck you, you aren't worth me bothering to try" to the opponent even if that's not what was intended.

I wouldn't recommend the anime because literally nothing interesting happens in the time period the anime will cover. The interesting angles aren't readily revealed until after the first competition.

It's pretty rare for non-merchandising-related shows to exceed the 52-episode mark, but there are still plenty of shows that split seasons and creep to that mark that way.

To use a recent shounen example, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu is going to cover the entire manga's storyline in just under 50 episodes.

Twin Star Exorcists is confirmed to hit 50.

it's alright, I guess. Decent leads but kind of a generic premise that hasn't really done it's own thing yet. Still always glad to see a heroine who's not useless and the hero has a Shell Bullet arm. That's cool I guess.

That's a pretty loaded question considering they're both two very different comics with very different "goals" that only necessarily share the cape-stuff.

One Punch Man is a comedy. It makes fun of action/shonen stuff and does it well.
Hero Academia is a well done action/adventure shonen manga.

There are a lot of things I really love about BnHA; big ones are that because Quirks tend to have some sort of drawback, or some sort of "recoil" if you use it too much, heroes' costumes are specifically designed to lessen or negate power overuse, or to amplify or diversify their ability set in some way.

The other is that not all heroes are the "classic" hero that goes out to stop villains or whatever. I love that they have branches of heroes dedicated to shit like disaster relief and whatnot, and people who choose those career paths are still Heroes in the eyes of the community and can get just as popular and well-liked as the ones who have big flashy fights with bad guys.

There's been a few other recent anime that have had a similar feel to them. One Punch Man sort of did it, especially with Mumen Rider, and it was the main theme of Samurai Flamenco.

Not "really". The Manga goes to the trouble of explicitly stating that people's powers are more like bodily functions than anything:

-The child with both cyrokinesis and pyrokinese needs to use his own ability to regulate his tempature or he'll kill himself.

-The girl with gravity control can only levitate so many objects before she gets a severe headache: levitating herself will dramatically increase this stress as well as make her horribly dizzy since she's most likely the "anchor" for her power.

They can evolve and mature their power extending the "soft cap", but there's always going to be a "hard cap" since they're only human.

Deku kept ripping himself apart because he'd put 100% in his arm, finger, etc.. Which was effectively artificially giving him the strength of 100'ish people artificially.
Many people comment that Deku wears his power like a "kid"; this may suggest children often hurt themselves using their own power and only later grow into it as they adapt and evolve around it.

Deku eventually begins to control his power when he realizes it's better to "regulate" it via dispersing it throughout his entire body- gaining more control over it. It times it's completely reasonable that he'll achieve all-mights power, durability, etc.

One of my favorite things about the series is that Deku didn't learn get reasonable control over some of his power through long, grueling training sessions but rather figuring out that he was using his Quirk wrong. That's a damn good way to keep the pacing up. It was also a natural revelation rather than the author pulling it out of his ass like what happens with so much other shonen.

It sorta bothers me how the anime is sorta meandering on. I understand that they were only able to start with 13 episodes because they were out in Gundam's timeslot or something, and also because production of the anime started when volume 1 was released, but it still feels really slow, with flashbacks taking up a sizable portion of each episode.

This is one of the few cases where I would be okay with filler. Focus a little bit on the other students before going to USJ. That could help things run smoother.

I'll be honest, while Hero All Might is great, I just can't help but love his depowered design so much. It's just so fun to look at; how sharp and angular he gets, the shape of the mouth and how it fits perfectly into the face, how lanky he gets, how his eyes are so sunken but always shine from the recess, how the hair frames the face. Any piece of him can become the central point of regeneration, virtually giving him an ability to "teleport"

Bakugo is actually intelligent, /fit/ and generally more capable than most, with a great quirk everybody praised. He's even quite charismatic.
It kind of went to his head, especially because by never slacking he was always the #1 around.

Deku was the only one who somehow did keep treating him "normal", never taking for granted anything Bakugo could do. Which, given Deku was quirkless, was a giant-ass INSULT to Bakugo's pride.

This is actually one of the reasons I'm preferring the way superhero comics treat side characters. Manga titles don't typically get spin-offs because of how the copyrights are shared between the publisher and the creator(s) so the chances of a popular side character getting series of their own is almost non-existent whereas Harley Quinn has series of her own despite her humble origins.

I might read BnHA a bit so I'll be familiar with the characters I'll be fapping to after next Comiket.

I like the setting and I like the heroism.

Alot of other manga series with "western style superheroes" are often portrayed as far more corrupt and/or incompetent. (Tiger & Bunny, OPM, Ratman etc)
While there are metahuman individuals in this series who care more about the paycheque or the fame it still has proper Heroes that care about doing the right thing & saving people foremost and these are the ones seen teaching the next generation.
Also the system of how legal 'superheroes' are organised by the nation makes sense and isn't ridiculously fascist and shady, and how the big name heroes are seen to operate when it comes to major criminal busts with the police providing support and meticulous strategy is a joy to behold. (the fact some of the students are planning to move into other fields like disaster relief organisations that suit their particular quirk is interesting too, its not just all punching supercrooks in the face)

Ok first of all, how can you talk about character development if you are pretty much straight comparing this to OPM. Dropping that point though, you have to be willfully ignorant to not be able to see the character development in this manga. Most the students, not just the MC have had a noticeable development.

I like OPM, and I have read One. They are different types of stories to Boku. OPM is a lot closer to superman then anything, as really its just about a god living among humans.

The anime just began so there may or may not be lots of straight stuff after the next Comiket, but straight porn doujinshis of shonen manga don't come in great quantities in the first place. It's mostly because the girls who read shonen manga are mainly in it for yaoi while the younger boys are too young to think of the characters that way and the older boys who're actually into lewd stuff are reading something else. Naruto is great example of how a shonen manga can be extremely popular in general, but inspires mostly yaoi doujinshis.

Possibly, I mean, anime and western comics have crossed over before and the author of Boku no Hero does love western comics (hence why his stuff shares so many design similarities).

Though honestly it would make much more sense for Boku no Hero to cross over with X-Men than Avengers or Justice League.

Would be a pretty interesting thing, though if the X-Men went into Academia world and started just doing that thing where they do hero fights without a license or permission they would get arrested because you need to be cleared for that shit in BHA-verse.

I'm not saying the bigotry and hatred is entirely justified, I'm just saying that you can't ask people to trust you not to abuse your powers WHILE abusing your powers and expect them to listen to you.

It's a running gag that whenever he's in his normal mode, fountains of blood occasionally erupt from his nose and mouth. Even in an anime, that's a bad sign.

Registering super human abilities IS the right thing to do. Rationally it makes sense to create a government database of what super-people are capable of so that if a crime is committed or someone with a non-human anatomy gets injured the information is readily available for people to act accordingly to catch or help the person involved.

The X-Men comic just glosses over this by having every single politician that lobbies for registration be a huge unlikable bigot who inevitably turns into a literal super villain. God forbid a character who legitimately has everyone's best interests at heart appears to support registration simply because it actually makes sense.

I mean fuck, it's not like people don't already register their names, addresses, relationship statuses, blood types, allergies, persistent diseases and a bunch of other personal information with the government or anything. Why should super powers be any different?

Yep and this is what always really annoys me, it's just common sense that this would be needed. You need a fucking license to own a dog in most of the civilised world. For even something as simple as a medical record they'd have to register that John Bobson does in fact explode so care needs to be taken when preforming dental work.

All Might has been constantly losing power before passing the power to Deku, but this has recently gotten worse due to overexerting it recently. The main problem is that translations were made through phrases that already are ambiguous in japanese, so it can't be determined if passing the power on caused it to get worse

If you've got a family, loved ones, all that jazz, registering the fact you're a superhero puts them in danger. Merely registering the fact you have powers also puts them in danger if they're close enough for anyone to put two and two together.

There are quirks in MHA that are just randomly more powerful than others. And stuff is definitely going to be getting stronger - this IS a shonen series, one of the primary draws is watching the characters progress, both in terms of personality and in terms of power.

It's one of the major plot points that OfA and AfO are capable of massive power creep.

Mutants are ultimately as good as the stories they're in. You'd be hard pressed to find someone on /co/ that would declare X-Factor or the old (yeah, it's old now) Young X-Men stuff bad. This is the case with everything in big two cape comics.

To be fair it makes sense in OUR world, but it's very stupid in the comics world as there are several entities that regularly steal from the government, infiltrate the government, or are just a faction of the government.

It's not like these villains don't track them down anyway in comics. I think most major villains have probably had a storyline where they find the heroes real identity

Plus the better organised they were the better they could deal with it when a villain found something out. In BHK the heroes aren't just random people but employees, most don't even hide their real identity cause you don't need to. The dress up and masks are more just a stage identity cause that makes it more fun

I mean like in comic time months after the SHRA was finalized it got taken over by Norman Osborn and abused to have all participants go to war with Asgard.
For us it makes sense.
For BnHA it makes sense.
For Marvel there's like five million instances for why it doesn't work.

It's only stupid on the comics because the human civilians are purposely written as straw man idiots so the mutants can look cool or mistreated.

Any time humans develop some means to protect themselves or a cure is made for mutants with dangerous or crippling powers it's always some sinister plot by the big bad racist humans who are trying to keep the mutants down.

Eg: That time a small country that was stuck in the middle of dracula and latvertia having wars for the last few centuries tried to repurpose Sentinels for military use so that they wouldn't be constantly known as collateral damage only for ht eX-men to come in and fuck things up. Not taht the x-men were presented as doing so or anything; in the end they still made two of the most dangerous nations on earth register them as a threat after destroying said threat and means of self defense.

Another example is when a dude figured out a way to give away mutant powers (the specific ones you want) and the X-men torched it in response. Now I could point out that the guy did infect all the X-men with some super flu but considering what they always do to everyone I'd have to say that's practically self defense.
