He brought the trolls together in the only way he knew how and the trolls responded to that, and it worked out for the most part given the success of their session. Karkat was valued as an individual by his friends, due to his compassion for them and willingness to help, especially with relationship stuff. But he was most valued for his efforts in leading, winning over people like Equius and Vriska who didn't value him at all. Even the kids realised that behind his insults he was interacting with them with the goal of helping everyone, even if he did it in a shitty way. That's the endearing thing about Karkat, he tries so damn hard even if he's not very good, he's doing enough where others aren't.
He put effort in to be valued and was rewarded, the big thing with Karkat was how his shortcomings stood to undermine that hard work given his influence on the frogs leading to the cancer, him not dealing with Gamzee properly leading to deaths on his team and other such shortcomings. Him suddenly deciding to drop all that effort is not a positive thing for a character, flat out. I was all for him confronting his issues, but avoiding issues is nowhere near the same as confronting them.
