Lucas told the design guys he wanted an alien general for the Separatists to be pottery with Anakin transforming into a cyborg.

They had to leave the room for him to inspect, when they came back the guys who had gotten a staple at the top of the art knew theirs was good and they should do more designing.

Chiss shota Prof X was one of the ones initially approved. Insect warrior was what was eventually chosen.

Besides, The Dirty Dozen is a decent war flick. Who else did you expect them to send after the Death Star plans? Their misfits with unique skills but problems that leave them ultimately expendable.

Up until recently Disney would create one good movie then shit out direct-to-DVD sequels almost as fast as you could breathe.
With that kind of turnaround they were never going to be the most creative of companies. It just highlighted how money-grubbing they were.

I think he was hoping that with Kanan eliminated he could lie to Ezra and say that Inquisitors got him instead.

Maul somehow became one of the better pieces of TCW and Rebels, all the while his character is almost the opposite of how he starts out in the franchise (but there is significant character development, so the changes feel organic to the character).

His re-introduction was still a bit heavy-handed, but I blame the Lucas gene for that.

Same thing happened with the Rebels Tv Show. It's harder to develop soldiers I guess, especially in a way that appeals to kids. Frankly, what they pulled off with the Clones in TCW was a goddamn miracle if you really think about it. I'm surprised Maz Kanata and Snoke aren't getting trashed on for being Sues like Rey is.

They are both ancient characters tied to the main cast and have great knowledge of everything important that occurred and they know the ways of the Force and have seen everything unfold with their own eyes despite us never hearing of them ever before.

Being a Sue is about more than just being powerful. It's about whether or not you warp the narrative around you.

Snoke doesn't, because all he does is tell the bad guys what to do.

Maz doesn't, because she does jack shit.

Rey saves the rest of the party by herself 9 times out of 10. She solves every problem and makes everyone else look like chumps. The reason it's only 9 times out of 10 instead of 10 times out of 10 is because there are scenes where she is literally not present at all, and in those scenes she doesn't save the day.

She saves BB-8 from a net he probably could have cut his way out of with that little torch thing he used for the thumbs-up. She aims the entire ship for Finn to shoot the TIE. She lets the rathtars loose to get rid of the gangs. She slams the door to save Finn from the rathtars. She fixes the Falcon when it's about to explode in hyperspace. She busts herself out of prison, so Finn never needed to try to lie to rescue her. She gets the team into the oscillator by fiddling with the wiring. And then she beats Kylo Ren all by herself in a straight fight.

Once Finn and Rey are together, Finn is relegated to a mere sidekick. Once Han and Chewie join the gang, they're pretty much sidekicks too, except Han gets two scenes to be the star (namely Takodana and the bridge scene). Rey overshadows everybody else in the movie to the point of outright domination. And THAT'S what makes her a Mary Sue: the fact that apparently there is no "Rey" in "team".

It doesn't matter. The explanation doesn't really matter. We might get insight that enriches certain aspects of TFA, as sequels can naturally do, but it won't change the fact that the way the movie seemingly warps around Rey like she's a guest in the world of Star Wars will still be there and it will forever be sucking tension out.

Maybe it's all like that Batman comic where Alfred and his old theater buddies lets Bruce live out his power fantasies. Leia just got her old friends together to give Kylo an enemy to fight and the first order are really only a bunch of republic officers treating it like a drill.

You can see his wound. Several times during his fight with Finn and Rey he hits it to make himself more enraged. It's not plot armor at all, and one thing I and SJWs agree on is that his wound is the reason he lost.

Here's the moment of impact. The shot clearly goes through the left side of his abdomen, and he's bleeding for the rest of the movie even through his thick clothing which for all we know could offer some minimal protection against blasters. Kylo wearing space-kevlar under his robes isn't exactly that outlandish.

Anyway definitely not a flesh wound. Pretty sure at least one of his internal organs was probably vaporized.

He probably stopped at least a bit of impact with the force, something Darth Vader in fucking Episode V showed he could do. Stopping blaster bolts isn't a new thing in Star Wars, and it was so strong Kylo couldn't even stop all of it.

Which brings me to the next point.

You want to know their reasoning? I guarantee you if you ask Stormie armor still isn't that great and Kylo Ren has some special armored fabric. Seriously, swear to god. Check the Visual Dictionary, EVERYBODY is wearing fucking combat weave cloth according to that damn thing. Kylo will turn out to have some super armor beyond what they would bother to create for the regular army due to expense,rarity,whatever. Kind of like that body armor Obi-Wan had in TCWs that stopped a high powered blaster rifle shot from a sniper so he could fake his death. No clue what that armor was exactly or where it went afterward. If the Jedi had those things standard issue there would have been a lot less deaths, or at least much harder work for the clones to take their generals down.

Kylo was also pretty far away

Wound vectors are a thing. Since the shot clearly goes through his body, it makes sense it wouldn't send him flying backwards the same way a center-hit on an armored storm trooper would.

He got shot and it hurt and that's why he lost to Rey. I don't know what else to tell you.

Luke literally loses every lightsaber battle he's in with a Dark Sider. I count the ROTJ as well because the whole point of the duel is to get him to use the Dark Side, which he does to best Vader.

Anakin is the same way. Both characters' inexperience is visible when they fight and at key moments they have to use the Dark Side to win. Except, Anakin can't best Obi Wan even with the Dark Side. We all now know based Sheev would have DESTROYED Luke.

The issue with this (along with the whole emotional distress thing) is that the movie doesn't convey that this factored into her victory, despite establishing the injury. He toys with Finn and wrecks Rey until she casually summons the Force. The whole thing could've and should've been done a lot better.

I guess him beating on his wound and showing the blood in the snow was supposed to be enough, but it really wasn't. They screwed up because when he fights Finn he looks pretty fresh to me.

Darth was a trained sith lord, and Han's pistol isn't that powerful.

Meanwhile, Kylo had just killed his father and lessened some of the impact of an incredibly powerful blaster. He was still badly hurt and weak in the fight afterwards.

It makes perfect sense, you just want to bash the scene.

So obviously every shot Han fired was the proper distance and atmospheric conditions for a very sensitive weapon to properly dispose of Stormtrooper armor.

However, the distance and atmospheric conditions were as such that even though the weapon has a high energy output, they contributed to the lessening of the heat and raw kinetic energy. Couple that the special magical space wool Kylo wears allowed him to survive the attack.

Or, it's a shitty ripoff of A New Hope and this scene is worse than literally everything in the prequels.

At most the closest I've seen to a general consensus on the matter is Rey that while she's hardly perfect and she needs more faults or to make more mistakes, and we also need to see other characters solving problems instead of her. Because we don't get enough of that her abilities with the Force were too much. She's getting bonuses from two fronts, using her specialized skills to solve problems but once she becomes their designated Force user on top of that these were other areas where she would ultimately excel, at least for the first movie.

In some ways it's hard to judge. I've seen people dismiss her being captured by Kylo Ren because it furthered the plot and required they get to Starkiller Base to destroy it, so her failure wasn't just plot mandated but plot furthering (and how dare she do that). But at the same time Finn having worked there, knowing the location, and how to destroy it and get the shields down was also all plot mandated and very convenient. But JJ relies on a LOT of plot convenience and while you could argue here it was just the will of the Force shaping events he does it in other movies to. A lot.

It takes place before the Star Wars comics but Luke and Sarco Plank go broforce on a bunch of Imperials and then duel with each other, while in the Star Wars comics Luke is...he's what you'd expect for someone who wasn't formally trained. In the comics he found a treasure horde of ancient holocrons but sadly didn't appear to grab any on his way out and the Empire confiscated them all. They at least (probably) kept all the extra lightsabers, for what that matters because it's highly doubtful that will ever come up again.

Luke Skywalker was a Jedi prodigy who still took three films to get really good with the whole Force thing.

Rey, who had just gotten her taste of the Force, like, 5 minutes prior, resists and redirects the mental probing of a dark jedi of the Skywalker lineage, successfully pulls off a mind trick on a stormtrooper without ever being told that's possible, and then outfights a (admittedly wounded) dark jedi of the Skywalker lineage despite this being her first time holding an ignited lightsaber. Also, she's a better mechanic and pilot than Han Solo.

I want to like her, but its hard to take a character seriously if they're constantly successful and bending the established rules of the setting.

And then next to her, as if to accentuate how awesome she is, we've got Finn. Poor Finn. The buttmonkey of the film who gets mocked and ridiculed by practically every character but Poe (may their bromance live forever), who gets the shit kicked out of him in every fight he gets into, and who fails at nearly everything he tries. Then, just to add to the shit-sandwich he's been force-fed, after having his spine damn near vaporized, I'm pretty sure he got friendzoned by his crush before being left behind in favor of Jedi training. Guy can't catch a break.

They were discussing whether she's dead or alive and Freddie mentioned that the bird was there for a reason and to rewatch Mortis, so I assume he means there's something going on with the Father/Son/Daughter or the living force or whatever. He made it pretty clear that the bird matters and Mortis is the place to dig for clues.

That would have been a better movie, uber powerful Rey wouldn’t matter as much if they had built up Kylo Ren as a bigger threat. Hell a ground battle where he wrecks the recistance would have added a lot.

Well it's not that Yoda can always sense the others. He couldn't sense Kanan and Ezra until the first time they entered the temple. If they never see him again he could very easily assume they are dead.

But that's only one possiblilty. Filoni pointing out that the plural of Jedi is Jedi is another. Basically Yoda pointing out that once he's dead, while he'll be a ghost he won't be the Grand Master any more. They will have to lead themselves. And we saw Luke accidentally lead them into slaughter again. Being a Skywalker sucks.

My personal belief is Yoda wouldn't have told Luke about the others even if he knew they were alive. Luke isn't meant to be a Jedi General leading the last of the survivors on an assault on the Emperor. He's the New Hope meant to stand alone against the darkness and, against all odds, win. He's not meant to lead them yet, he's meant to make it possible for the Jedi to return, to stand out in the open instead of hiding from the Empire.

THEN he gets them all killed later on.

If it was about Poe it would be even worse. Dude was insane. Can fly anything, his parents were super awesome parts of the Rebellion who saved Luke. His dad got to hang with Han, his Mom got to go on missions with Luke and Leia. He grew up with the magic Force tree in his back yard. He has impossible flying skills able to shoot stormtroopers across the battlefield right in their ten ring instead of just strafing, then he banks and takes out a bunch of TIEs.

He ended up soloing the Starkiller oscillator, too. And not just that but he did it through a trench run THEN flying inside. Eat your heart out, Wedge, Poe did everything you did all in one go in the same damn movie.

And he apparently does this all without the Force.

Exactly. Him killing Finn would have made much more sense. I think it could have played out differently, too. He kills Han Solo in another way and Finn decides to fight him so Rey has time to flee, it would have been more dramatic and Finn would have done something really heroic. Instead they both injure him and basically win the fight until the quake happened.

This is the one that bothers me the most because it's so easy to fix. When Han is telling Rey and Finn that the jedi really existed, they could have just had her ask "is it true they could even control your mind?!" and have Han wave his hand in front of Rey's face and say "You will stop asking questions" kind of mocking the whole mind-trick

So then later when Rey is completely desperate she remembers that and says "fuck it I might as well try"

What bugs me is the whole getting off Tatto- I mean Jakku only to miraculously end up with Han. Why couldn't Han have been on Jakku and piloting Rey and Finn off willingly, regrouping with his bigger ship leading to the stand-off?

Instead we get that the Falcon was stolen? Rey knows how to fly and repair it perfectly. Then, miraculously, Han finds his ship.

Honestly, I could write a long essay on the reasons why Han Solo dying is bad, or the stupid fight scene but you could it right before. He turns around and doesn't kill Finn. Why? He just killed his freaking dad so why isn't he killing a traitor? Rey and Finn shouldn't stand a chance and yet they did, that's bad writing. But Rey WINNING the fight is awful writing. I also think Han Solo is too smart to die in such a stupid way. He was always the experienced one. Even if he cares about his kid, Kylo killed everyone. He knows about the emperor and Darth Vader now. He knows how screwed things can get. And this is what, 30 years later? That's what insulting about his death scene. He died without purpose because it goes against everything his character.

Rey didn't win anything, and didn't stand a chance against Kylo (who also happened to be hit with a weapon that normally sends people flying) until she got a luck shot in before the fight had to be abruptly ended due to a planet exploding.

Him dying was a fitting end to a character whose whole arc was about being less of an asshole and learning to care about other people, culminating in him absolutely wanting to believe that his own son wasn't a villain.

The funny part is how much of it was all Kylo Ren's fault. His fucking with her brain through the Force gave her the idea for the mind trick (and supposedly in some version of the script Kylo's poking around broke some kind of block that was keeping her Force powers in check), and then when they duel he nearly has her beaten when he has to mention the Force giving her the idea to do what Maz said to do, find her calm center, and let the Force into her life.

Given everything else Kylo did he's secretly one massive, consistent fuckup throughout the entire movie.
