Ms. Marvel is cute and has a well written story that isn't centered around her being a girl or muslim, just a super hero.

Patsy walker is cute but lacks a good story that isn't focused around being a girl.

I haven't read Squirrel Girl but I can say she most definitely isn't cute.

Ms Marvel had good art that clearly a lot of love was put into. Her supporting cast felt real and warm. Kamala herself is fun and endearing.

Hellcat and Squirrel girl have garbage art, annoying characters, flat jokes, and go-nowhere plots.

That's fair, but Squirrel Girl is still a sore subject for some, me included.
Hellcat just faces the problem most books by Kate Leth have: it's boring and nigh inoffensive. I like the artist, sure, but Kate's just not a good writer, and the book just doesn't have any kind of draw.

This doesn't even include all the first muslim hero thing that Marvel didn't even do intentionally. Kamala got pushed way harder than any of the other new teens, but a least her comic is good.

I don't think my LCS carried Ms. Marvel until I started buying it. Zero Hellcat, Ms. Marvel, or Squirrel Girl. The next week I come in to pick up my backorder comics and issue #5, I see a bunch of other Ms. Marvel #5's as well, and I live in Jersey! Although the owner is a big on the older side. Another LCS (that's also a /tg/ store) not too far from here had all three, though.

Because Kamala is 16, whereas Squirrel Girl is in her early 20s and Patsy is in her 30s. It's OK for Kamala to act the way she does because its appropriate for her age group. Squirrel Girl can kinda get away with it, but is dragged down by the art in her book being awful.

Patsy has no excuse to act like a teenager when not only is she in her 30s, but other characters in her own comic have even called her middle-aged which makes the fact that she acts like she's 16 even more absurd.

Why? These are the same people that regularly hire Deodatto, Booth, Land, and Liefeld. The worst thing about a "good webcomic artist" is just that they generally suck at paneling, but when you have people like Rocafort who have gorgeous art but are absolutely horrible at paneling getting a pass, even that is a negligible con.

People were shitting on her for all of her first 2-3 issues, mainly because of preconceived notions going in and the fact that her first arc was extremely decompressed in the vain of Ultimate Spider-man's origin. Once her origin arc finished up and the pacing improved, it's been mostly praise for her around here barring the occasional /pol/lack trying to start shit because "m-m-mudslimes!"

Hellcat suffers from being written by Kate Leth, who writes boring fluff pieces. The only thing interesting about Kate Leth isn't her writing, but her history of cutting, depression, and attempted suicide. Her cute, quirkiness, and hugboxing bullshit comes off as coping mechanism for insecure, self-loathing, and fragile ego.

Her comics are mildly more interesting if read as a escapism of someone with mental health problems.

In all seriousness though, it's just better writing. By the end of the first issue, there were already characters I cared about, and character dynamics that were interesting enough to feel kind of "real". I don't mean they were entirely realistic, but I felt like they were based on people the author actually knew or at least knew of. I never got the same feeling from Hellcat's first issue. I never felt like there was really anything THERE. The art in Ms Marvel is weird, and cartoonish in a way that has personality and genuine quirks. Squirrel Girls on the other hand, just has art that is straight-up awful, and Hellcat is bland as all Hell. On top of that, With Ms. Marvel I usually get a sense that her arc is going somewhere, that I don't get with those other two.

To anyone who has tried to read her Hellcat, does she ever delve into this kind of existential angst in it, or does it stay saccharine and fluffy? Because I think that if that book had even half the emotional truth here, instead of feeling like it's an attempt to cover up these feelings with ribbons and rainbows, it would be a much better book. The best authors draw from their emotional experiences, including their pain. And if she did more of that, I think she would be a much better writer than she is.

Not even sure how much Wilson wrote of that.
Most of the funny stuff was in the pictures alone, while the dialogue was mostly not so jokey.
But the art is really amazing. It makes for this crazy, vibrant city where everyone has a story, every odd thing is there for a reason (whether we know or not), and there is No Normal. Ba Dum Tiss!
Like that guy we saw all across this arc who is texting on his phone all the time, misses a manhole, breaks his leg but still comes to school to tweet about the Kamalocalypse.

Squirrel Girl and Hellcat exist as mouthpiece comics for their writers' beliefs first and foremost, and any humor and story comes second.

Ms. Marvel tells an actual well-written story, with a likeable, fun protagonist, that happens to be about a Muslim girl, rather than Muslim Girl: the character.

Also, Hellcat and Squirrel Girl are supposed to be mature adults, but their comics have regressed them to womanchildren. Kamala is an actual teenager so any childishness is forgiven, but even then it's not as present as it is in the other two.

Ms. Marvel has drama - conflicts and obstacles that the main character has to overcome, and those conflicts and obstacles are often bad things that are harmful. For Hellcat, at least, that doesn't happen, and likely never will, because it's a "safe" comic about Cute Mental-Age Girls Doing Cute Things. Which is a shame, because I like Patsy Walker, and that Kathryn Immonen series from 2006 or whatever showed that you can write Patsy as an immature ditz and still have her be badass and have good character moments where she acts like an adult

I know this is going to fall on deaf ears but some characters work better for some genres than others. They're can't be interchangeable ciphers that can fit any tone and agenda AND be well written, the two concepts are mutually exclusive. You are right. There is nothing wrong with a slice of lice comic. But then make a new character or use one that has a tonal history that fits. Ms Marvel is an example of doing this. Hellcat is not.
A great example of why this is a problem is when you look at how Batgirl is going. Or it would be if people were able to think past the current issue and realize that the tonal shift was jarring, inorganic, and poor storytelling rather than just going "Why do you hate fun" in response.

A lot of the management has changed since the Ken days, but it means very little as:

A. The newer people are just family of older staff.

Well, it's an ethno-comedy with super heroes.
The only other time this has been done to my knowledge was Steel. And that was mostly unintentionally funny.
I would not say it's a class to itself because the constituents have been done to death.

Grounded writing. Actual characterization instead if 'tee hee grrrl pwr look at me I'm hip and awesome!' admittedly, a recycling of the classic Spiderman formula but that's a good thing imo.

Basically, if you try too hard to be 'quirky' it never feels natural.

I also feel that squirrel girl works better in ensemble stories. GLA was great.

It's a long story, but Ken Penders raised a stink with Archie Comics demanding that he be paid royalties for all use of his characters in the Sonic comics (and there were a LOT of them, mostly echidnas). Archie apparently couldn't obtain the needed legal documents to counter his claims. It was a mess, to say the least.

Afterwards, SEGA started getting stricter on their mandates for the comic, with things like "Sonic can never be allowed to lose" and "all character designs must adhere to the style of the SEGA games", while Archie began removing Penders' character at the expense of several story arcs they had running at the time. Eventually, they rebooted the whole book at #250 to wipe away all trace of Penders from canon.

More like Archie panicked and forced that to happen because they didn't want any of the other creators doing what Penders did/ What Sega did was put mandates on the book (Which were already sort of place in the pre-reboot, but are much more obvious in the reboot> Your mileage will vary on whether they helped or harmed the book overall)

It's a lot closer to the games, and while it doesn't reach the highs of the pre-reboot (yet, it very well could and there's a couple stories that are really close to that level), it also never reaches the insanely bad lows of the pre-reboot. It's mediocre to good in general. The best stories are in the side book
Also the "demented genius" stuff was from 160 on. The stuff beforehand, with very, VERY few exceptions, was bad. And I mean Storytime of Pain BAD
