A good villain in a story that at least tries to be serious doesn't need to have a sympathetic backstory, they just need to have a reason for what they're doing.

However, "I enjoy seeing planets get destroyed" is good enough when it comes to simple comedy shows for kids.

You can have a great villain that is pure evil without deep motivations, you can have a great villain that is sympathetic, you can have a great villain whose motivations make sense yet is entirely unlikable. It all depends on how you write it and how it works within the story setting.

I'm a sucker for a villain that kills the hero's philosophy of "everyone is good." Some people are just bad people, and the hero getting that lesson in harsh reality is fantastic.

I also love the obstacle villain, the one that is so irredeemable and horrifying that they're more of a force of nature than anything else.

Dominator works because of the context. Look at other villains in WOY:

Dom works because she is sadistic manchild who wants to kill everyone i nthe entire galaxy by blowing every single planet, for fun. she works because in this context she is something Unique.
Put her in, say, DCAU which has guys like Darkseid or Mongul and she looses the charm.
Good villain must be fitting the story, adding something to rogues gallery.

I like to use the example of Darth Vader for these sorts of discussions.

Consider the very first movie, New Hope, what did we know about Vader and his motivations? Almost nothing aside from what we are told by Obi-Won. He was a Jedi who turned evil and killed the others.

Apart from that, he was nothing but this immensely imposing presence that radiated power and menace. There was no deep characterization, it was all about presentation and style.

And that was enough. He was immensely popular, people loved him, and he's still regarded as one of the greatest on-screen villains of all time.

Like someone probably said, it's all about execution.

That's what made Billy so frightening, you don't know what's going on in his head, what turned him that way, etc. All you know is that he's fucking insane. That and him rambling like a believable schizophrenic rather than being someone like say Freddy Krueger.
Kind of simulates the effect of being in the same house with a lunatic who wants to kill you no matter what and you don't know why.

A good villain makes you hate them or otherwise feel desperate to stop them. Regardless of their motivation. This can be done with more sympathetic motivations, or with more morally basic ones.

However, not all antagonists are villains.

Good villains, much like good heroes, cannot be simply boiled down to extractible elements and compiled like some kind of math equation. I feel like that's something many people miss about the creative process. It's all about how the various elements act in concert with each other, the execution of the story, the dialogue, the setting, and millions of other details acting in harmony that truly makes a story and its characters "great."

Wander's entire belief is that everybody has a nice side to them. So what better antagonist for him than a person who is 100% content with her evil, which has no tender side for Wander's joyfulness to use.

Not counting the staff keeps using the term of "A serious villain invading our cartoony galaxy" as a way to sumamrize their plans for this story; Basclly the fact she isn't like the rest of the villains in the show is on purpose, showing how out of place she is compared to them, which makes her much more dangerous and unredeemable.

Let me put it that way, Harris didn't want to write it. He only did it because studios wanted a movie and he was afraid someone could do a worse job or something.
It's fucking boring.
The actor for Lecter is probably the worst of all Hannibal actors. The dialogue is painful. There's pretty much no suspense, Lecter was trained by his samurai aunt and even kills a guy who insulted said aunt with a katana (seriously). In fact there's no effort to show that Lecter is a monster because everyone he kills is either an asshole or a complete bastard, so he comes off as unintentionally (or intentionally if the writers are that bad) heroic.

Also, imagine the most boring moustache-twirling one-dimensional main villain imaginable to show that Hannibal himself is not that bad in comparison. (Not even like Mason Verger, because Verger is at least entertaining in how evil he is. Grutas is just shit.)

I agree it depends on execution, obviously in real life even psychotic spree killers usually think they're in the right, at least justified if not outright misunderstood heroes.

In a wacky cartoon? Evil just because can be fine if they're entertaining.

When things are serious, It's harder. Let's take The Beast from Over the Garden Wall. He's actually not evil for the sake of it at all. His motivation is simply survival, and in some ways, there's no more sympathetic motive, is there?

So I'd say if I'm supposed to take the story seriously, "I'm evil just because" is a tougher sell, yes. Even the most evil monsters in history don't think that way. Worst case scenario real people are just batshit insane, and a defective brain is a rationale in itself.

Villains need a motive for their deeds.

Whether the motive is that they are a fallen hero, someone who is doing the best for his people, or someone who knows existence is meaningless.

That said, my favorite kind of villain is the one who choose the villainous way because "the world needs a villain".

Someone who takes up the mantle of evil to unite people together as one, so as to stop petty internal conflicts. In a way, by becoming the target of hatred and war, he actually stops these things.

Sadly once the villain is defeated the heroes always go back to fighting against each other.

Not a lot of examples of those villains.

I do think ironically they're a minority of people who commit truly horrible and especially wide scale atrocies. The problem with YD's design is, that it is very stretched. Her head and neck area are not her best looks.
When they revealed her at first they focused solely on the neck and upper body area, working their way slowly down until the full body reveal.
This made her neck look especially long (it is not that long with the rest of her proportions) because we didn't have the shoulders to compare them to.
When we finally got to see her in full it seems they intended to have her shown at a slightly lower angle so that she looks bigger and her size in comparison to a normal gem is more imposing. However the environment in the same shot is not drawn in the proper perspective, so it looks extremely weird and her design appears bottom-heavy.

I will admit though, I disagree with your example. If Lord Hater is WOY's Skeletor, then Lord Dominator is WOY's Hordak. She's more powerful and more of a threat, but no where near as entertaining to watch.

She's the villain and exists in contrast to the rest of the cast. Villains in WoY up to this point always had some underlying motivation or sympathetic point that Wander can exploit or understand. Dominator invited this kind of thinking from the cast (and the audience to an extent) purely by virtue of being a girl. But actually she's simply just the worst kind of villain of all, who likes to fuck shit up just because.

I enjoy sympathetic villains whenever I can get them. The good vs evil trope fucks up people's view of the world. They see everything as black and white, good versus evil, when actually it's just full of sympathetic human beings. The world is nothing but heroes fighting heroes.

It's all about opening your mind to different cultures/perspectives. My favorite villain is Gul Dukat. I love the Cardassian culture and I love how he plays on it. I wouldn't want to live there, but it makes for very compelling characters and narratives.

Does he have redeeming qualities? Yes he cares for his family (within certain structures) and he loves his people.
Is everything he does deemed wrong? It really depends on you. The show does lean towards him being the bad guy, but it also gives a fair shake to his motivations in the early to mid seasons.
Is he "saved"? Absolutely not. This is the most important part of his character. He is truly a tragic figure i.e. Macbeth. His downfall is entirely due to his own cowardice, pride, and arrogance. He was given EVERY chance and he would throw it in their face because he could not deal with being in the wrong.

For all his machinations, for all his sacrifice and pain, for all his nobility, he was still lost to himself. Absolutely brilliant character arc.

I actually think most people are some of those, especially selfish, but they rationalize their actions to themselves. I remember when that guy who kept three girls he kidnapped in his basement and tortured and raped them was caught. That's fucking inexusable, but his diaries were filled with him excusing his own actions and actually blaming the girls for what was going on.

Now, I was simplifying by saying "thinks they're heroes" taking off of what other anon said, it's more that people manage to rationalize or justify even horrific shit. Take the discourse around slavery, which I think is one of the most evil things humanity has devised. In the US supporters used all sorts of nonsense to justify it and rationalize is, including saying it was God's will and other bullshit. But the institution was flat out evil.

Watch the part 1 (Phantom Blood) and part 2 adaptions, they're pretty well done. I'd recommend reading part 3, unless you can handle the slower pace of the part 3 anime compared to the first two. /a/ usually has a jojo general up with a pastebin that should link you to the manga, and the anime can be found off of damn near any anime streaming site.

Read the other parts, and avoid any and all discussion of the series while you read because people love to spoil it. Enjoy the ride, it's one hell of a trip.

Dominator really only works because the villains are generally one note in WoY. They want X thing out of what they're doing, or they're trying to conquer all. Dominator just wants to see everything in flames and destroyed, and enjoys it, which is pretty radically different than other villains in the show. Plus she's competent and has yet to be knocked down which is pretty unique.

Those are serial killers, not spree killers. They usually have different motivations.

I'm not the other guy who said people have sympathetic motivations. I said that people don't do evil just for the sake of being evil. People who are sexually aroused by killing do it because they get off on it. I think that type is pretty rare though.

Greedy dictators, for example, do bad things because they get shit out of it, but their family and friends also probably get shit out of it. For a lot of people, not just dictators, screwing over people outside of a certain circle of people is justified by providing for your family and/or yourself. People also are entitled and reason they themselves deserve this or that. They're not sympathetic, but they don't think they're evil.

When you read writing by people who have committed atrocities, or just serial killers, they usually have lots of rationalizations and excuses for their actions.

I'll drop one: I eat meat, and don't plan to become a vegetarian. A mountain of scientific evidence now clearly shows that many of our food animals are sentient and capable of both motion and a certain degree of reason.

I still eat them. Give me a while, and I'll cough of some rationalization and excuses for why I continue to do so. Future generations may well judge me as...evil. And they might be right.

Lets take Dominator here. She is just bad. She does what she enjoys, like most people. Just what she enjoys is evil. I don't see why there has to be a deeper reason for it, its just kids, ants, and a magnifying glass.

IMO its nice to have a villain who doesn't need to be explained. I don't need to relate to the antagonist unless the story is about them.

Actually, heroes are very, very often criticized when they're like that as Mary Sues, unrealistic, etc see people's complaints about Superman.

Is not unrealistic but pure altruism rarely comes from nowhere, people criticize Superman since he really doesn't come from a background where someone would be that altruistic. Wars of revolutions and Independence for example have many characters who really are that altruistic but it is because of the environment they lived.

I'm not saying is impossible but people have a hard time believe such people can exist in times of abundance.
