That being said, you're probably wondering what made it so popular and why the fans are a near autistic bunch.
Truth be told, Homestuck had just a few innuendos about sex between the troll characters, who do not have gender identities. Couple that with the human children characters coming of age in the story, and this web comic became perfect for preteen fans that were looking for that "unique" item to wrap themselves up with and transform into special snowflakes. It's why many fans like to say their not gay or lesbian, but prefer the off brand sexual orientations or gender identities such as pansexual or gender fluid.
Then the author began to pander to them. And so for 2-3 years, this comic was the go to item for people to cyber, ship, and RP with others. Fans got older, the author finally convoluted his own story to become unrecognizable, and that's it's now okay to openly bash it. Before you'd get lynched for it.
That's the story. It's webcomic that allowed a lot of closeted people to not admit their akin to Chris-chan, and instead, part of a fandom that coincidentally allows them to explore sexuality and shit without shame.
