You do at the entry level, but eventually you sort of hit this point where you become valuable to the police force beyond just being a patrol cop and you get older and you gain some weight and when you go to your physical they tell you you're overweight for the hundredth time but nobody really cares.

I've actually heard they don't hire people with good grades. Not because of some "lol dumb cops" meme, but because a higher education usually means lower career loyalty; once a higher paying job they're qualified for becomes available, they ditch their current low paying job, and being a cop doesn't pay very well in the first place.

This isnt true though, cops frequently receive severe consequences for something as little as a breach of protocol. Police departments just dont like to flaunt it around because it can, and mostly likely will, make the officer a target for harrasment.
