Garnet's height, with the huge afro on top, makes her the focal point of the group. You can immediately tell who's in charge. The blocky shape of her afro gives off a stern vibe, and her eyes being covered makes her look emotionally distant and/or secretive.
Pearl's long, thin limbs (and long nose) make her graceful, ballerina-like poses the first thing you notice about her.
Amethyst's squat shape (exaggerated by her hair, which gives her overall silhouette the shape of a sack slumping down with gravity) makes her look grounded/lazy, and the messiness of her hair (and originally, the asymmetry of her clothes) showed off her carefree attitude.
Steven is made almost entirely or circles, and has an overall circular shape, making him look sweet and harmless. The star on his shirt is the clear focal point; while Garnet's clearly the leader, Steven is clearly the most important.
With Star, your eyes are pulled all over the place and don't settle anywhere, and if you couldn't see her facial expression her character would be a complete mystery.
