Babsgirl has been really good, I'm finally at peace with Oracle being no more. I think the book is actually setting up her roommate to be the "new" Oracle.

Really, things are fine at the moment in terms of status. Steph should be Spoiler for awhile before she becomes Batgirl and Babs finally has room for new development. Let Babs' story continue for a bit before kicking her out again. She reminds me of Nightwing where she was kind of eternally stuck in her role known mainly as "the girl who used to be Batgirl", and Nightwing finally got to grow past that DECADES later with Grayson, so I want Babs to go to new places as well.

Cass, I don't even know what should be done with her. Maybe call her "Batgirl" but she only hangs out with the Titans or something.

I don't think the direction is even bad. It's welcome after DC fucked up and decided to make her the "ONE TRUE BATGIRL", but the writing is just awful. It's just a series of blog-friendly panels with no cohesion, plot, or steady character arc

That's what female characters are now. Conflict free mannequins to hang cute and plausible (read: fun and easy to cosplay) clothes on.

Babsgirl really needs better writing. A unique direction that can't be filled by another Batgirl would help too. Her poor book is even more disappointing considering that Cass and Steph were both completely removed from continuity for her sake.

What's frustrating is that everything points to the same team doing a Birds of Prey spinoff. Like, if you're going to do that with Babs, fine. It's not a great book, but it's not the worst, and it's good that have that type of book. But don't paint all of your female Gotham characters with that same brush.

It had a good start, but it got derailed by mandated event tie-ins and editorial meddling, much like all of the other Batfamily books (Nightwing, Batman and Robin). Except Red Hood and the Outlaws, which started off as shit and stayed that way

Actually I'm defending Cass as Batgirl because she is by far the most competent fighter of the three and because she doesn't behave like an obnoxious hipster. I'd also take generic asian ninja girl over spunky-cute-white-girl-shows-boys-she-can-fight-crime-too. With Cass it at least feels like she believes in the mission, Babs and Steph feel like they fight crime because they think it'd be fun.

But when people say they want Nightwing back, they usually mean stick him in a city, have him do street level stuff, and have the batfamily crawling all over it.

Cass doesn't need to be Batgirl. No way they will let anyone but Barbara have it, especially now that the book is considered popular, unless whatever Cam Stewart keeps hinting at with #50 turns into Batgirl Inc or whatever.

Cass is back and she just needs to be her own vigilante.

They want the status quo back and Dick's status quo since the mid 90s has been a Batman supporting character doing what Batman does. Everything from JLA to Titans to Outsiders is secondary.

I half expect Bruce will return and go public with his identity and that's why Dick can return to Nightwing. From there he will relaunch Batman Inc as a smaller operation. Babs will handle Gotham with the birds and Bruce while the other batkids expand.

What does bigotry even have to do with this? It's a comic book. The consequences are what the writers say they are. I think you're taking it too seriously. Babsgirl is operating under the rules of her own book with its own world with lower stakes than Batman's. Doesn't hold up under crossovers with other Bat books, sure, but it's fine on its own. And Steph was universally acknowledged as a fuck up and the weakest Bat member even after training with various other Bats, needed Oracle's support, and fought far smaller villains than Batman does. Tim's Robin book was similar.
