You start by calling them zombies and you end by having people use lures and harvesters to get rid of them en masse.
Then you erect barricades they can't enter to secure a peninsula or the like and build up a community.
Also houses are by their very fucking nature just about zombie proof if your door is more substantial than plywood. Maybe you have to roll down your shutters on the ground floor, but that's it.
If you are a gated community already, all you need to do is convert your backyard into fields, then maybe think about improving on your walls.
If you are in a tall building, you can protect a ton of people with just one or two accesses.
Hell, my house would be zombie-proof right now. And even if they get in, I could on my own fend them off on the stairs, with the attic as a last, unassailable redoubt.
In fact, just about anything is better than going camping, where you control nothing.
