If you are a gated community already, all you need to do is convert your backyard into fields, then maybe think about improving on your walls.
If you are in a tall building, you can protect a ton of people with just one or two accesses.
Hell, my house would be zombie-proof right now. And even if they get in, I could on my own fend them off on the stairs, with the attic as a last, unassailable redoubt.
In fact, just about anything is better than going camping, where you control nothing.
