I know its "cool" around here to be dumb fucking hipsters but NGE is possibly one of the best animated works this medium has to offer. Taking them at face value the series may seem like a dumb typical shounen but underneath it all its a pretty good character study about loss and coping. Thats why shows like Steven Universe take obvious inspiration from it. (Poorly though) Its one of those things you have to watch multiple times to see all of the little nuances that were there since episode one.

Personally I prefer other mecha, and thought Nadia and Gunbuster were better than Eva. Eva makes the characters unlikable and it has too much meaningless symbolism, as opposed to something like Utena which did those things well. It's good, but it's not the most amazing show ever by any means.

The movie were shit. The original series was better even without an ending. Half the problem was they couldn't give it any decent ending anyway, and rather than resolving the more interesting loose plot threads they just culled all of them.

It's less that, more these characters are too awful to sympathize with. Nadia was a bitch, but grew enough by the end to be somewhat respectable whereas most of Eva's main cast were still pretty groan-worthy come end game, sans Misato.

I definitely appreciated NGE more after rewatching it because I found it easier to sympathize with Shinji. Not sure why, but a few extra years of life experience made me much less judgmental of someone who can't stop themselves from fucking up.

I honestly don't know what to tell you man, but I loved all of the characters. In fact in my opinion they all have a tremendous amount of likability despite being such damaged and flawed characters. Hell that's what I loved so much about the series. In fact that's the main draw of the series. If it didn't work with you then I don't know what to say. Also the symbolism wasn't meaningless, it was there for cool factor yes, but it was also used to tell the story and aid in character revelations as well. I mean the Series literally means Gospel for a New Age. Again I don't know what to tell you. Hell just take Asuka and Rei, brilliant deconstructions of the character archetypes of the era. I can rattle off all of the tropes that were torn apart by the series. Asuka wasn't a basic tsundere, she was a complex and ambitious individual who made a definite mark on the show come her appearance for example. As time went on and we witness her existential crisis we aren't just afraid of her like in the beginning of the series, but we find ourselves afraid for her as well. The writing was just done to a point where I couldn't think of a single character in that show that I didn't enjoy to some extent, and it easily has one of the best female casts in the history of Animation imo.

What do mean come on, you don't have to stretch to understand that the biblical symbolism was an integral part of the setting and the overall feel of the show. Without it the show wouldn't have been the same. Indeed it through the religious symbolism the show managed to convey information about the characters and world even if it was just in a superficial way.

Eva's like Ulysses level of mythological symbolism. It's the skeleton, the "breed" if you will of story that's going to be told. However, the actually story itself is essentially very different despite moving to hit the appropriate plot points along the way.

I actually just finished Nadia last night, it was great, though if I were to compare to Evangelion, it would still be subpar. Nadia is wonderful, a great anime where everyone you expect to get a happy ending gets one. It has the lurking darkness throughout, with some adult themes being lightly touched upon, enough so children could learn from them, but not so much a discussion of them.

Evangelion on the whole is a discussion of the lurking darkness and representative largely of someone's personal depression. It's not perfect, as depressed Anno can lean too much on his visual skills and largely forget storytelling at times. Still the deconstructional and post modern elements of Evangelion are absolutely perfect for the time it was made, Evangelion is one of the pinnacles of post-modernism, it grasps the idea perfectly.

Just because Anno chose Evangelion "because it sounded cool" doesn't make the religious symbolism null and void. Its very clearly woven in to have meaning withing the context of the story.

I'd say on the surface level of the story telling, the giant robot part of the storytelling, but Evangelion isn't really a giant robot anime as much as it is a character study. The giant robots and quasi-religious creatures are only a means to end to move these characters into action. The key theme of Evangelion has always been about "not running away", everything grew out of that germ essentially. If you look too far into the symbolism and mythology all you get is a mess really.

Just watch the original TV series, then the compilation movie Death & Rebirth, then the final film End of Evangelion.

If you want to see the modern interpretation that's still waiting for the last film to be released, watch the first three of the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, though you won't enjoy them as much without watching the original source material.

Death and Rebirth makes a lot of concepts presented in the series easier to understand and contains new footage as well. It's still a compilation, but it has some alright stuff in there, along with good presentation in my opinion.

Most people don't have any idea about how a war is. They have a video FPS vision of conflicts where deaths are clean and think ugly things only happen in nazi labs or torture rooms with prisoners. They don't see the children mutilated because they happened to be near a guy that they thought looked like a terrorist from a drone image or other civil causalities. Also they tend to have the view where every person in a place is as responsible for the doings of their soldiers so they don't mind about the newborn baby, the immigrant who was unable to return to his country due to the war and even the prisoners of war.

Most of the religious imagery is just this shallow scraping along the lines of "crosses are spooky because it's Japan." But I would say that the nonreligious symbolism, all the Freudian shit and all the relationship stuff, is far more valid.

You hit the nail on the head, especially considering Anno did most of his research on psychological theory during his four year depression after he finished Nadia. He outright said each character represents both some form of mental illness and a portion of his own personality, either conscious or even his subconscious.

I won't say it isn't pretty looking however, all the design is great throughout the show.

It is the frame work of what the story is. The way the story is told is different but it is essentially the rhythm of the story. The whole point of Shinji's messianic role doesn't make any sense without it, it also servers as an excellent backdrop for a story about one who is on a journey to find purpose. It's a fundamental part of Eva and a huge part what made it so great. Regardless, I'm sure we can both agree that while we might both dispute the depth of the theological elements we would never assert that the series is worse of for them.

I just realized that there aren't actually that many animated films that could be considered some of the "greatest of all time."

There are tons of really good ones, but there are very few masterpieces.

Oh I don't dislike the elements, I just think their importance gets over hyped in the western fan community, a lot of it stemming from folks like Matt Greenfield and Tiffany Grant honestly. It is certainly a piece of Eva's unique charm, it has some of the best mech design of any giant robot show out there.

Asuka's voice actress turned down his marriage proposal, and the show's budget got slashed because there had just been a huge terrorist attack in Japan and everyone was watching news and not animation. He had to scramble to end the show on a shoestring budget while dealing with his own personal depression, and the end result was a really shitty and unsatisfying series finale. To make matters worse, fans sent him tons of angry and insulting letters complaining about how shitty the ending was.

The studio heard the fan complaints and gave Anno the chance to make a big-budget movie that would be the "real" ending of the show. He hated the fans and Otaku culture in general at this point, so he basically just used the movie to unleash all of his anger and frustration. He was also on some very powerful anti-depressants at the time.

Anno had a major depressive episode during the production of Eva and it's reflected in the show becoming more moody and miserable as it progresses. As someone who lives with depression, EoE is more accurate to how you move on than EoTV. EoTV tells you to just decide you like yourself, and then everything will be allllrriiiight. Shinji was completely and utterly broken at that point and was desperate for someone to help him. He had just killed Kaworu, he had learned all about Rei's secret and was afraid of her, and Misato was too preoccupied in her own grief to properly comfort Shinji. So in a last ditch effort for someone to comfort him in his time of grief he turns to Asuka, and tries to get her up so he can lean on her in a sense. That leads to him uncovering her breasts and masturbating over her. He doesn't do this because Anno wanted to make some dig at the audience, He does it because it's the only thing he knows how to do in that moment, it's his primal urges taking over. It's also what finally pushes him to point he's at during the attack on NERV HQ, where he's unwilling to get up and move and would rather lay down and die instead of piloting the EVA.

Also it's important to know that before he went to see Asuka he tried to drown himself.

I really like Kon, but I was really disappointed by Paprika. The plot was convoluted without any payoff, the characters were flat, the dreamscape which could draw from unlimited pool of dream imagery was dominated the parade which became overplayed like ten minutes. Major EVA fan here. Loved the show and the director's cut episodes, but the movies just haven't aged well. In high school I thought they were some of the most amazingly crafted pieces of animation ever. I also could not tell you what the hell was happening in them. The older I get, the more I see them as bloated with meaningless symbolism and self-importance. It's visually impressive but completely loses the narrative in the second half in favor of a rambling sequence of self-examination and discovery that leaves us with what? The end of the world? Basically people were allowed to choose if they are going to be part of the instrumentality or not. We only see Shinji and the Asuka/misato/rei girl but other people would return too, they just didn't happen to return right there in that right moment.

I also think the story and general pacing of Paprika could have been way better. In my opinion, they would have been better off without the whole technology plot. Just a woman having a dream persona shifting through various dreams would have been perfect.

The dream sequences however were EXACTLY like real dreams in the way scenarios and identities flowed into one another. I haven't seen anything like it before or after. Especially not Inception.

The warped religious bits jive with the themes of parental alienation. The messengers of our creator seem to want us dead. Everything is wrong, something that should be spiritually nurturing has become cold and strange. It seems as though our progenitors fucked up and want us dead.

In some ways the Angels weird, detached relationship of hostility with humanity could mirror the relationship of Gendo and Shinji. The the Angel/Humanity thing is the rift between our childhood and our adolescent. It's dealing with how much of horrible dick your dad is, it's realising that maybe god is an alien and he doesn't give a shit about you. It's a present situation that retroactively alters the past and makes the future look ominous. The whole Angel thing might be the distinct possibility that if you don't kill your dad/god he's going to kill you.

The giant robots are all about the anxiety of trust. It's scary to climb inside an enormous living thing. It's an intimate connection that can go horribly wrong at any moment. And if you fuck up everyone suffers and that's gonna be on you. Climbing into an Eva is opening yourself up to serious harm in all forms but also carries the potential benefit of becoming an awesome human being that saves the world.
It means taking on responsibility for yourself and others in spite of the consequences.

The fact that Shinji doesn't want to get in the damn robot and doesn't want to open up to his friends is sort of like pottery from ten thousand years ago with inscriptions saying that your made out of tang

I'm not a web in the sightless but I enjoyed NGE, mostly thanks to the animation.

The creator, Hideaki Anno, has stated in interviews that he chose all the Christian/Abrahamic symbolism because 'it sounds cool', kinda like how we (westerns) like to use ancient religions to make cool stories.

However, it has such a deep rooted significance in the story that many refuse to believe this and that Annon is just being humble.

I HATED Haruhi as a series. I thought it was fucking boring and only appealed to the waifu shitters.

Her mother went insane and took care of a doll as it was Asuka while neglecting her real daughter.
