It gets glossed over because the stories were intentionally kind of "dumb", but The Authority were always a pack of cunts when it came right down to it. Midnighter killed Kaizen Gamorra by pulling a super-9/11, The Doctor destroying almost an entire country, etc.
It's still shitting on one set of characters, or stand-ins at least, to validate another though. Then again, Ellis isn't exactly innocent of that himself.
