If they cared about "realism" or "practicality", he wouldn't even be Batman.

If a superhero costume was based on how "practical" it had to be, there'd be no tights or bright colors.
When you're designing a superhero for a movie, you have to accept that there is some shit no one's gonna ask about. If they do (why doesn't Spider-Man have any armor, why does Hawkeye use a bow, why is Wonder Woman's bodice strapless), they're probably the wrong audience for something like this.
So long as it doesn't look like a retarded toy (the designs in Batman and Robin come to mind), no one's gonna seriously judge your movie based off of tiny nitpicky details like what Batman's underwear is made out of or why Superman can fool people by putting on a suit and glasses.
It's just accepted as a thing that goes with the character.
