I liked John K. Emphasis on past-tense. I think he's just lost it at this point, and we should appreciate what he already did right, instead of overanalyzing his descent into madness.

They used fuzzy math and basic geometry to make stuff rotate in 3D space when it had to, without just having machines do it for them. It was hard, it was expensive, but the outcome was usually almost too good to be real. Watch the girder-climbing scene in "Night Walking" for a good example of 3D drafting and background painting.
Also, the old Merrie Melodies shorts by Leon Schlesinger and Tex Avery are pure gold ("Hamateur Night", "I Love To Singa".)
