>>78753028The humor of Heathcliff is impossible to define in the scope of mortals, but I'll give it a go. The first thing you have to understand is that there are multiple types of Heathcliff strips, with wildly varying levels of humor. The most basic resembles a normal comic strip. Just a funny situation with a joke. Believe it or not, there are some Heathcliff strips with grounded, reasonable jokes. Most of the time, they aren't funny or make a ton of sense, but they are understandable, and are clear in what they are.
>>78752783 for example is just a joke about slow animals. It's very understandable, a little weird, but there's a clear joke. Whether or not it's a funny joke is up for debate, but that's beside the point. Moving up through the levels of humor is a bit hard to describe. Like the anon before said, some are just indescribably whacky situations with some mundane text, and the humor comes from the juxtaposition. Like

There's not a lot of logic in these, but the situation is still kind of clear, and the absurdity of what's happening mixed with how everyone reacts so nonchalantly make it funny in its own way. Even if Heathcliff is doing something really weird or something odd is happening, it's still made clear that this is just in service of the joke, so the cartoon logic still holds. There are multiple sub levels in this humor where the logic of the situations keep deteriorating as you go up, but I have neither the time nor mental capacity to dive deep enough into that. Then there are the strips that seem to fit into this category, but either the situation, or the reactionary text, or some combination are just so fucking bizarre that the logic just stops, and the situation stops making sense. At this point a certain amount of insanity from repeated Heathcliff exposure is necessary to derive humor for it, but rest assured, when it comes, it is pretty funny.
