What do you find more interesting?

A character that was a complete monster that genuinely seeks atonement after experiencing prison?

Or a character that only pretends to seek atonement because he doesn't want to go back to jail but in reality he's still the same monster he used to be?

I'm having putting these ideas together and how I want this character to be.
