Like Jimmy Two-Shoes, it was supposed to be cheerful characters trapped in hell with a city populace of monsters who aspire to be villainous or just unpleasant.
But networks said no, so in the case of Baskervilles it became "some rich guy who thinks he's the devil made a theme park designed around hell and hired actors to pretend to be the monsters, then became fixated on one family who wasn't traumatized by the whole thing".
Gets even worse, at times the show plays it completely straight with the original concept before having a character give the "devil" shit about him just being crazy, or having a robot skeleton gab on about how he's a robot.
So in the pilot, you see her whole family put on costumes before they meet the family since they're just supposedly actors. But from that point on its played 100% straight as if they've been there all their lives, beyond the idea they're just acting anymore.
