Hiking really is a big German thing, too. Lets you get out and enjoy all those picturesque mountains and forests they are so proud of, and sing loud German folk songs about hiking. Loudly.
And lustily.
Most of them are pretty cheerful, although in keeping with the German and German romantic spirit, some are also very morose, and wistful. This is a culture that brought us lots of songs about faerie kings stealing the souls of small children and young men more or less pining to death or drowning over naiads or whatever.
