You know, just ease up on the "find yourself" bit, go a bit closer to the end game, because it's way too obvious that he didn't figure out anything about his place, precisely so he can have something to do in the future films.
On top of that, I think, if I'm honest, Superman works best as either an Obi-Wan like mentor who is there to catch other heroes when they fall, or as what the first two Christopher Reeve movies did: Someone who makes you believe a man could fly.
I don't think he's too good as a stand alone character when you try to do a serious story about him specifically, because most of his drama comes from questioning what the right thing to do is. If he's by himself, then that just ends up a whole lot of Superman talking to himself and nothing being accomplished, because he's really not built for the whole "take pilgrimage to Tibet and find your inner peace" kind of self exploration shtick. He needs someone else who he can relate to, someone who's trying to do the same things he does to talk with, or the story needs to concentrate on something completely different.
