He has a point. Batman sells because it is Batman, not because of the quality of the comics, etc.
He is completely fine with reappropriation old characters for new uses, its what the Greeks did and he's made a career out of it, he just thinks that the deification of the Golden Age characters is bad and we should move past that.
I mean it all comes back to the one popular comic he made that he famously doesn't like much, The Killing Joke. For all the artistry in there, ultimately it just services the mythos and characters of The Joker and Batman, and says nothing about the human condition, etc, but just those characters. Cape comics are so fucking incestuous and inward looking, I can see why he completely disavowed it, though I disagree with his argument.
