I was expecting this to bomb and be shit, but this was easily the best MCU movie to date.

I typically avoid any thread for movies on /co/ because I don't like to be spoiled, so what was the general opinion here?

Saw it twice at it held up really well on rewatch.

If anything I appreciated the different tensions between the characters and Cross' full-blown psychotic break during the climax of the movie more the second time around.

I'm sure Wright's version of the movie would've been really cool too, but Peyton Reed and Paul Rudd managed to make a great Ant-Man movie that also ties in incredibly well to the already-established MCU to boot, which Wright's film most definitely would not have provided.

It's rare to find an action scene that can bounce between multiple perspectives (large-to-small scale) and still maintain a sense of pacing and continuity in fights.

The briefcase scene was tough to follow apart from the gags painted with broad strokes (the Cure joke, for example), but that was likely meant to be chaotic in comparison. The action scenes during the heist itself and the fights that happened after the briefcase landed and in Cassie's bedroom were top fucking notch.

I think it was redeemed by the very end.
Cause Scott's whole thing is sort of proving himself to his family, and being a hero to his kid, and then Falcon comes into play...and now he's a legit one.

Yeah it didn't really fit well with the rest of the series and felt like a weird little intermission or side-story that interrupted the main development.

I mean it DID serve a purpose, it proved to Hank and Hope that Scott actually DOES have what it takes to get shit done under pressure, but I feel like that could've been handled in way that developed more organically out of the Heist format of the movie.

Cross was great because you literally had no idea what he was going to do next, or how much control he actually had over his actions. Where someone would draw the line between Cross's own neuroses and paranoia, and actual brain problems caused by his knockoff Pym Particles.

That being said, after he puts on the suit to fight Lang, it's pretty obvious there's a change in his thought process. He ping-pongs all over the place during the heist and beforehand, sympathetic at some times, genuinely concerned about Hope and Hank at others, callous and cruel in others still. After he becomes Yellowjacket that focuses onto one very, very specific motivation: to destroy Scott Lang and everything he holds dear.

If there's one thing this movie did well, it's how they handled bouncing back and forth between "funny" and "horrifying". Size-change fights and action scenes are fun to watch, but the times they do touch on the real consequences of Pym's technology it gets pretty fucking spooky.

Originally I ranked GotG above Ant-Man, but Ant-Man stood up better to rewatching than Guardians did.

Guardians is big, fun, flashy and has great gags and likeable characters, but the characters are very much "what you see is what you get". They're effective at their roles, but Ant-Man's cast has more interesting development and interactions that keep your attention on seeing it a second time.

I'm glad this movie and Scott were so good. I was so pissed that Quicksilver was killed off so quickly because he's my favorite Marvel character, but after this film I can safely say Scott Lang is my favorite MCU character. Vision a close second.

That would've been a really fantastic bit of characterization for Ultron, but nope here we are.

I agree with a lot of this, but I would put Hulk and Thor 2 at the bottom, and switch Iron Man 2 into Iron Man 3's position. IM3 was far more of a disaster than IM2. At least with IM2 us mech-heads got more thoughtful armor designs with glorious fat body War Machine, the Mark 5 and 6, and the Hammer droids. IM3 pushed a lot of gutter-tier designs that seemed to come from intern sketchbooks just to try and propel the armor-spam scene into something impressive (which it certainly wasn't).

IM2's biggest problem was that it had two villains that never got the development they needed, and never posed a legitimate threat to Tony because the emphasis was on his own self-destructive habits, and thus the fights were all his to lose.

If they movie just picked one and ran with it rather than trying to do BOTH Hammer and Crimson Dynamo, it wouldn't have destroyed all its dramatic pacing halfway through the movie and/or been able to build it back up so the final act of the movie wouldn't seem like such an anti-climax.

I've seen IM2 a couple times and I think it gets way more shit than it deserves. IM3 I ALSO think gets more shit than it deserves, but it has more problems than IM2 did.

Winter Soldier, Iron man 1 and Guardians are all significantly better. Antman was a solid movie, but it wasn't amazing by any means.

Why? This movie as is still fucked with the source material enough as it is. Wright, at the very least, is a much better visual director. Again, the movie itself was fine, but it wasn't particularly impressive in any area. The microverse stuff in particular looked really dull and you can almost guarantee if that was in the original version of the script, Wright would have done some really crazy stuff with it.

Besides, all those MCU connection scenes weren't forced as fuck and it made Falcon out to be a pretty big asshole for busting out those uzis like two punches into that fight.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize Hank and Janet were shield covert-ops 30 years ago and that Hope Pym exists in anything but MC2 where she's on the board of directors in her dad's non-existent company and her dad never built Ultron, but he did take on a one-off villain who never had super powers but was more or less a human Ultron that created the Yellowjacket persona.

I guess I've been making up a bunch of headcannon shit for those hundreds of Avengers stories I've read.

Dude shut the fuck up. People thought that the movie wasnt going to do well because AoU left a bad taste in their mouths and there wasnt that much of a push for the movie in the months leading up. We got the first trailer like a month before it came out. No one thought that it was outright going to bomb, we just had some doubts.

People always said that ant-man was gonna bomb, way before AoU.

What people don't understand when they assume that a marvel movie is gonna bomb, and the guardians of the galaxy ended up proving this point, is that people like Marvel. They will watch anything they made. If it is good or not, it doesn't matter. People like marvel movies, people like the MCU and assuming that a movie is gonna bomb because of the director or the time it took to get made is stupidity. Those "cinema rules" don't apply to marvel, that's why they managed to make the MCU a thing.

Even AoU, which is a weak movie indeed, is still enjoyable to watch, with it's endless quips and the good ol' marvel formula. But this recipe works, and will keep working until people get tired of cape movies.

I was shocked that marvel did that scene and every time I watch it its the scene that first truly says villain in the way of he doesn't feel empathy and hes okay with it. Watching the movie now it makes more sense for the YellowJacket suit instead of the shrink gun because Hydra would be using it for stealth missions and probably eventually against The Avengers. The thing about the Falcon scene was that it took Ant-Man from the realm of it's own story with light references to characters like Stark, into "hey we are in the Avengers movie world, isn't that great."

And while having Marvel movies share universe can produce nice things, forcing the crossovers just doesn't work.

What really sells that fight for me is that it's the first time in the movie when it really looks like Cap's fighting for his life. You really get the sense that they're evenly matched instead of him just punching in the bad guys' faces like he was doing for the rest of the movie up to that point.

It was a really nice more down to earth cape flick. The cheesy lines from the trailers about how Ant-Man sounds stupid weren't even in the movie. Definitely one fo the most enjoyable out of the bunch, in the same category as first Iron Man and Winter Soldier.

People who legitimately thought it was going to flop severely underestimate the hype of Marvel movies. Even normies are suspicious of WB after GL and DKR, Man of Steel got mixed reviews, but people were less hype for it than fucking Guardians Of The Galaxy - which were mostly completely unknown to casuals.

What I think is interesting is that in the rest of the world Ant-Man is the third least in-bringing MCU movie, but the Chinese loved it; it's only beaten by Avengers in the box office. Why is that? Is it the Kamen-Rider/Super Sentai-esque suit?

Or do Chinese just really love ANTS?

Once you've worked your way up to vertebrates and mammals there isn't much difference between using different ones unless you're studying specific organ systems or something.

Even disregarding the "BUT THEY'RE SO CUTE" argument, rats would be better to use because they're much, MUCH cheaper to keep and raise in a lab than sheep.

Budget Magic? Panoramic shots of Hammer Drones blowing up in the distance is probably far cheaper than a closeup threeway power armor brawl.

All the Marvel movies except Winter Soldier and Ant Man have had poor to nonexistent boss fights. Either they fight total pushovers like the Chitauri in Avengers 1, or they Deus ex Machinea them like in Guardians of the Galaxy (i liked GotG except for the limp ending).

Oh yeah, definitely. The insect theme, the suit material. It could definite be a Rider design with a few tweaks (bigger eyes, forehead gem, more prominent belt buckle,etc). That could be a project for a /co/ drawfag (except it doesn't involve waifus or porn).

Personally I like it right up until Bruce breaks out of the prison, and then it kind of shits the bed with the ending. It's a better cap to the development of Bruce as Batman than people give it credit for, during the whole trilogy Nolan plays up the idea that Bruce really doesn't want to BE Batman forever and is so destroyed about the end of TDK because he saw it as his final stand, and was looking forward to settling down and having a normal life with the city saved. DKR was him realizing that the city is always going to be under threat, but the ideal of Batman was live on even if he's not under the cowl. So he sets up a way for it to continue on and remain a part of the public consciousness. If anything it's pretty damn Morrisonian because like the chalk markings of the Batman symbol represent, TDKR marks the Batman's apotheosis into a meme

It managed to show some realistically screwed up relationships (Lang is estranged from his divorced wife and their daughter, who is trying to move on and is dating another guy, Hope has huge daddy issues from basically raising herself after her mom died) but manages to show them all in a way that doesn't demonize one side and makes the other out to be a saint. Hell even Lang's ex-wife's new cop fiancee turns out to be a pretty cool guy by the end of the movie.

This. It was really fucking nice to show a functional stepfamily.
I think going out of their way to make Bobby Canavale's character sympathetic at the end was a little too on the nose but I'll take it over another "muh ex-wife's fianceé is an asshole, I'll sure show him by the end of the movie" plot. Him genuinely caring about Cassie was a nice touch.

It was incredibly hammy, and really, that is the only way Stoll knows how to act. Trying to take him seriously just becomes laughable, like his part in Black Mass. Yet this worked together perfectly in this movie.

Did the British not watch American movies back when every villain was British? I think they watched them even more, because they liked having all their biggest/best actors in blockbusters.

Being the only worthwhile part of House of Cards probably helped.

Stoll reminded me a lot of a 90's action movie villain in Ant-Man, where the character on the page was pretty rote so they just got a talented character actor to ham his way though and elevate it. He was basically doing a 90's Gary Oldman or Brian Cox performance in this, it was fun.
