I like it, it gives characters that wouldn't be used a chance to do something for the first time in like 20 years. However, the obscurity of the character and the fact its voted in probably means that character will do next to nothing in the run anyways so plans aren't dramatically altered.

The idea of having someone a little bit more out of left field — nothing against Polaris. Polaris is wonderful and has absolutely shined in Gerry’s X-Men book. But that said, she’s obviously one of the earliest X-Men that exists. So we’ve got some more characters in here that are a little surprising and I’m hoping that someone really interesting will win. Realistically, one of these 10 will be a very neat addition to the team.

>AIPT: And how did you decide on these 10 candidates? Was it a group effort?

Jordan: Yeah, that was very similar to last time. I think Gerry initially had a handful of names and then he was like, “Who else can we add to this?” And we all started throwing in folks that would sound interesting. And just like last time, the most important thing was that Gerry was into writing them. He was like, “Yeah, I’m on board for this. If this character wins, I’m ready.”

Last year, the biggest problem I had was that Gerry started coming up with too many ideas right away and I had to slow him down and say, “Only one of these people is getting onto the team — don’t think about them too hard. You’re getting too excited about things that might never happen.” He’s got that experience now, so he’s not writing up a pitch for every one of these guys just yet, but he’s got inklings already for sure of things that he would do with each of them. So that’ll grow into a whole storyline once we find out who it’s going to be.

So just because they’re not on the list doesn’t mean they’re definitely not going to be on the team. Don’t rule them out — well, except for Armor. She’s not going to be on the team otherwise. So obviously, the fact that she’s on here means that.

But we also think she’s neat and she’s a neat character. She had some really big stories in the past and hasn’t really done a ton in recent history. So it seems like she deserves another shot. That said, it’s not in our hands. We’re giving her that second shot and we’ll see if she can make it happen.

>AIPT: Now, in regard to the last X-Men Vote, I have you on record — in X-Men Monday #100 — saying, “The real disappointment for me was Micromax not even making the list of nominees.” It’s clear you placed Micromax in the running — how can we assume you won’t rig this election in his favor?

Jordan: OK, well I definitely suggested him for sure. Because listen, I love every character who ever appeared in the original Excalibur series. I mean, you’re lucky that the 10 aren’t like Micromax, Kylun, and so on. But also, Micromax has cool powers. Size-changing powers are fun and there aren’t any other X-Men who have them — depending on what you consider X-Men — but there’s not a ton of them. And he’s got a cool look. Is his personality the best? No, but sometimes that can make for good comics. Everybody loves Guy Gardner on JLI, right?

I don’t know that X-Fans will vote for her because of that. And listen, I don’t know that Amazing Friends has an internet fan community the way that The Gifted does. So I don’t know that there will be a Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends campaign. And even if there is, do they want her on the X-Men or do they want her hanging out with Spider-Man?

Jordan: And then it’s additionally complicated by the fact that, as I mentioned before, she’s not even a Krakoan citizen. The last time we saw her, she was working for the U.S. government helping to stop teen heroes from being teen heroes. She was more concerned with American politics than she was in claiming her Krakoan citizenship and becoming part of the island. Obviously, if she joins the X-Men, that will represent a huge change for her. That’s a huge change we’re open to, but are the X-Fans going to forgive her for turning her back on her people like that? I don’t know.

Jordan: No, we know, and I think that’s part of why they’ve got a couple of slots on there. We’ve talked about this a bunch before, but the X-Men sliding timescale problem is that in real life, new generations of mutants come after a bunch of time has passed from the previous one. So for the Academy X folks, they’re the new generation. And it’s been a bit since the last one, but as the timeline keeps shrinking and getting condensed, unfortunately, some of those generations get lost. The Academy X folks for the most part have been neglected in recent years for that reason. People have been more interested in exploring the New Mutants and even sometimes Generation X and then even more recent characters like the Wolverine and the X-Men students.

So we know those characters haven’t had the spotlight, and I think that’s part of why we went, “Hold on, there are some great characters in there. Let’s give them a shot too.” Now I hope that doesn’t mean we’ve split the Academy X vote. I hope that they’re not going to just be in a bitter fight with each other. And who knows, if you remember last year, lots of political alliances happened. People who weren’t going to vote for Banshee banded together to try to vote for Banshee to save him. So maybe the Academy X people can put aside their differences and pick their candidate and decide who they’re going to back. Which one? I don’t know. We’ll find out.

It's as if most mutants have lived through a ton of combat so Apocalypse created a system for warriors to get their powers back quickly because he was prepping for the Arakki to invade, any form of death puts you back in the queue and dying in the crucible or while on a mission for Krakoa bumps you to the top of the line instead of being placed based on time/need (Forge would instantly get bumped to the top even if he died choking on a chicken bone).

And it being fucked up was even addressed in New Mutants when a 13 year old girl asked to be put in the crucible because her powers had turned her into a freak and not in the regular I'm now a person with scales way.

This leaves pretty much the only worthwhile additions on the team being Armor, Gorgon, Micromax, Siryn or Surge. Armor can help out with being a massive tank and protect other members. Gorgon's petrification stare can be a clincher and is great fighter if they get into a situation where their powers are disabled. Micromox useful if they need to do something stealthy and sneaking around. Siryn shows she can hypnotize people and give them a radar. Surge gives the team a speedster and the electricity element.

Id say Surge will add the most to the team.

The current X-Men books may as well be a different universe for how little they're referenced or the X-Men show up outside of their island. And when they do show up it's usually just like Wolverine or Storm for a few pages acting like normal. X-Men has always sort of been in its little bubble and they've only ever come out for the BIG crossovers, except for Wolverine who'll appear in other stuff but I agree they're even more bubbled now. X-Men and the Marvel Universe have never really needed each other really, X-Men can survive as a property seperately.

I do know that a lot of writers for other non X-Men comics who are in other offices do give sly digs to the X-Men right now, I think the Fantastic Four straight up called it Jonestown in one issue, and I remember a couple making fun of all the orgies, and they established Franklin Richards as a non mutant just to get him the fuck away from Krakoa and probably so X-Men writers can't use him.

I would legitimately like someone to lay out how the hell they can extend this status quo to that long, considering the X-men have basically been speedrunning through over 50% of their greatest obstacles to intergalactic domination and only have Nimrod/Omega Sentinel Orchis left as a recurring nemesis that isn't portrayed as being throughly retarded and out of their league. I'm giving them three years, at best.

Like, for how much shit you could give the Clone saga, it had an overlaying conflict to keep it going, however retarded that conflict got. The X-men just keep getting more and more generic fodder to throw at them since they already brought in every mutant villain under the Krakoa umbrella and wrote off most of their other recurring foes as either impotent or pivoting away to easier targets than the mutant swagger.

Well there's still the Children of the Vault to face, I think with the space expansion and how SWORD went there's also potential for intergalactic war they get involved in through the Shiar. Also while Orchis are currently the representative for the humans they fight, there's still stuff like X-men vs Avengers again or other super powered beings they butt heads with. Id say more like they got 5 years, Hickman still left a roadmap of his ideas through Omega of there having an arc fighting against the posthumans from Children of the Vault until Pocy comes back with his family to turn things around, then maybe also how they get back the Phoenix on their side to fight against the Phalanx in an arc showing on of Moira's past life, and there's also the Vulcan thing that probably set up for intergalactic war.

I mean technically by Hickman's plan, the Krakoa thing should be ending around now. Marvel knows how to drag shit out. They can probably drag it out until at least 2025, especially if they do a Hellfire Gala and vote for the new team every year.

Its wild to think that this was initially some sort of cautionary tale, that Krakoa was meant to refelct cult communes and shit, and now Hickman's gone and the writers in now think that Krakoa is a good thing. I think Krakoa's gonna stay, and I don't think it'll be the tragic downfall of mutants after the highest point as originally planned, because the other writers just don't get it, they don't get that the X-Men are bad guys right now and Krakoa is a bad place and this is all a bad thing.

The "bad" part is probably not gonna get played until after they beat the primary human enemy group Orchis and sales decline so they can put the X-men against the Avengers/everyone else in the MU. Really I think people were dumb to think Krakoa was anywhere close to dying around this time with Inferno and them resetting the timeline when there were still a lot of plot threads and conflicts that haven't been resolved.

IMO you can't go wrong with that concept. People love superhero academies to this day. I guess, the Current iron man is good if slow-paced, and the first couple of issues of Ridley Black panther have been interesting so far.
The main problem seems to be Brevort/ Aaron just does care about consistency in terms of continuity between books.
to Aaron, the only books that matter are his own or books inspired by his books and everything is completely irrelivent to the Avengers story he wants to tell, but since none of the solo writers seem to care about what he's doing it just comes off as quite disjointed.

Not him but yes the Annihilation story as a whole didn't even feel like a Marvel story but the fact is that Annihilation was meant to be its own thing even if it was set in the Marvel universe. The aftermath of it doesn't even bother the characters on Earth because it was taken cared of. It was never Annihilation's intention to fit in with the Earth portion of the Marvel universe which might as well be the rest of it.

I don't read BP but the whole Empire of Wakanda is pretty fucking irrelevant for the most part when you read other cosmic stuff. I don't even think they mattered for Empyre. They were touched on in one TLA tie-in and other than having a diplomatic representative in S.W.O.R.D. Ewing didn't really care to touch on them. So they're really not doing a good job trying to fit in even in cosmic. I'd be surprised if they new BP writer even cares to adress them in any significant way.
