The only thing that really sets apart the US is the fact that you WILL be shot if you step on people's dicks, even if it lands someone in jail. Anywhere else, the government can do as it pleases and there are no consequences, in the US, cops and feds get shot and die as easily as any other person, and they know this, and they have to decide what stupid heinous orders they are willing to risk their lives for.
The drug war failed because they thought they could guilt and moral panic into giving the overreach a pass and they didn't. They've tried to ban guns and criminalize and stigmatize guns for decades and now there are more gun owners than there's ever been, the US civilian population owns 46% of all the guns in the world.
