I haven’t watched yet. But it would have been really cool to have the movie primarily about Abuela Alma when they first arrive. So her raising these kids, and balancing protecting this little community and being the keeper of the light.
And she tries her best, she really does, and she’s ultimately kind at heart. But over the course, there are some hard choices she has to make, (maybe she refuses to take in some defectors from the rebels, knowing that she’s condemning them to death or something ) and that’s how the cracks in the foundation begin. As the triplets grow, she becomes more obsessed with keeping the encanto and her children perfect, fearing that she’ll lose one without the other.
Honestly, it’d be good less as a fantasy, but as slightly more gothic horror, especially when it comes to the house as a character of its own. The house is magic, it loves and protects them. The house is magic, it demands love in turn.
