As far as shows go, if the crush is built up enough, they almost have to get rejected. It's nearly impossible for the relationship to live up to the hype once it's reached that fever pitch.
One of the non /co success of "guy getting the girl after a long period of pining" is the american version of The Office with Jim and Pam, but even that required a "reset" where Jim gets rejected, goes away, then comes back with a GF and the script is flipped with Pam pining for Jim. The build up is shorter the second time so when it works out it feels less anticlimactic.
