Thousands of people were growing up in conservative Christian households, being forced (sometimes with abuse) to abide by arbitrary rules they didn't understand, causing a lot of pent up frustration and bitterness at this entire culture. Then, as they were growing up, it was becoming more and more acceptable to speak up against Christianity and criticize it, and the creators felt free to express their disdain for the religion by idolizing hell for the sake of being contrarian.
