Saru can be based, but he's generally more shit than he is based, and Burnham isn't terrible, but also not great either. She's just okay. The new love interest they gave her is actually pretty good, too. So was the klingon ex. Tilly is alright, same with blonde gay doctor & femgineer.
The fact I can't remember most of their names despite being considered "main cast" should say something, though. Everyone else is pretty shit, including both the female helms officers, the gay doctor's husband, and the rest of the cast.
