He's definitely playing a big part in it. Not only is he featured as an aged version of himself on that announcement banner, but we never did get an answer as to WHY THE FUCK Fionna and Cake were being beamed into his head. Also looking forward to him being ashamed of his creepy finn and jake fanfiction where he wanted to fuck fionna now that he's lucid.

The moment Simon and Betty didn't get together, jesus, disappointed. and broken.

Marceline and Bubblegum got together but he didn't damn.

I coped out of it by shipping Simon and Minerva for a headcanon, yeah Finn's mom and Simon.

Hopefully Simon gets a happy ending in the new series.

There's no way AT would've ended with Simon and Betty together with no repercussions. Too convenient. Betty bringing Simon back at the cost of her own sanity is exactly the kind of bittersweet monkey's paw shit I expect from AT. The best we can hope for now is that he's at peace with his new life, and MAYBE finds a way to save Betty. I guarantee if that happens it will mean either one of, or both of their deaths though. A simple Simon and Betty happy ending is not in the cards.

Have you ever watched a show that derailed its premise and warped the show's original vision? Have you ever watched a show where the main character's combat abilities are nerfed, have their love interests taken away from him and constantly have to suffer for the sake of "fake maturity"? Have you ever watched a show where two characters had their personalities completely ruined to make them as a couple? Have you ever watched a show where the ending pretty much tells you that, despite you watching religiously from the beginning to end, nothing else mattered because of subverted expectations? Have you ever watched a sequel to said show where the main character is still treated like shit by making him secretly suicidal and has a big question mark on the rest of his life after the finale for stupid reasons while lesbians get a happy ending?

There's your answer.

Basically, people didn't like the latter half of the show as much when Muto was showrunner. Though the vitriol towards Muto in particular only flared up post finale. Muto hate wasn't that common when the show was actually airing. At least not singularly on him. It was more common to see people hating on storyboarders like Xayaphone, or Jesse Moynihan, especially during season 6. What makes the Muto hate even more fascinating to me is that the threads during seasons 7/8 were genuinely comfy, and most the people who bitched about the show during s5/6 had either left, or were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the show during this period. Something changed during the final season, particularly in the build up to, and reaction towards the finale. People were annoyed at the lack of focus on Finn+Jake, and leaving Finn's life so open-ended. And Muto, naturally as the showrunner, was singled out for blame. Muto even confirmed it on an interview that he will go save Betty again, so it's a never ending cycle. But I think he dropped the idea because of the Fionna spin-off.

Also continuing on what I said, they pissed around for entire seasons on rando nothing characters and plots. I'm all for focusing on different characters of an ensemble cast like an anthology but the stories they picked were stupid, out of place or made no sense. So many episodes in season 6 or 7 tried so hard to be deep when they just weren't and ended up nonsensical. They could have told better stories that tied together more. Instead it was just a mess that went nowhere.

That's not even mentioning how Muto didn't allow Finn - THE MAIN CHARACTER - to not have a major role in the finale and him pulling shit out of his ass justify his pacifism as "maturity", completely robbing him a chance to save the day. And Together Again does the same shit again. Finn doesn't even have one last moment of triumph against the Lich, it's Mr. Fox who saves the afterlife. It's fucking insulting.
