>>125637666You see that in every goddamn franchise. You can't just 'make the thing', it has to subvert expectations. You can't have the Ten Rings be actual rings, no they're weird armbands for no reason. You can't have Superman be superman, he has to be a deadbeat dad (Returns), neck snap emo (MoS) or needlessly aggro then ded (BvS). You can't have a SW story that's the one fans want, you have to say fuck tradition and the old ways were bad. You can't have a Picard who's a heroic idealist even for a world of idealists, you show him a broken, jaded old man who most people shit on for zero reason. Etc.
Honestly Revelation was less woke than I expected, switch Teela out for a male character and nothing else changes, the crux is the secrets and betrayal and forging your own path. But... why? Why do a subversive reinterpretation of a series that ever barely got played straight? The 80s show was toyetic barely animated cheesy kid shlock, and the 2002 show made zero impact on pop culture. Why not go for making The Definitive He Man story first?
For all its faults I enjoyed that Voltron Legendary Defender tried to do that, tried to tell a similar story to the original only "serious" and modernized. This is just needlessly changing things that fans never got to properly enjoy to begin with.
