My idea would've been that as a child prodigy, his parents were willing to sell him to the Emperor's Coven. He tried to flee and went to the Owl House, to the witch he's heard so many glorious stories about, begging Eda to take him as her assistant instead, to save him. But Eda, younger and not really interested in taking on a kid, rejects the idea and lets the Emperor's Guard take him.
Hunter then spends several years working for the Emperor, specifically under Kikimora, doing whatever cruel tasks for her, even if it means killing for her or being her pincushion. He has to wear a collar that chokes him if he ever resists. He believes his body and mind is no longer his since all he does is whatever Kiki tells him to do.
So when Hunter finds out the Owl Lady has taken on a homeless girl, he's extremely resentful and vengeful.
I thought that would make for some quick, light fun.
