The main character has no personality of his own/no needs/no interesting wants, neither do the villains take interest in him.
Shit like The green ranger/Chase Young taking an interest in Omi in Xiaolin Showdown is the other 50% of the ideas that most western cartoons lack, but French and Jap cartoons have too much of and suck dick at keeping themselves reeled in and making it feel fresh and put into perspective.
This comic feels really fucking good compared to the trash we got in the 2010s by comparison. It's just that it lacks that extra creativity like Mao Mao which breaks the mold to make it really stand out/make it memorable.
