Even the original Pacific Rim, which some hold as a gold standard for Western/US mecha production, couldn't even break even with the domestic market alone- it managed to make over its budget only because of international markets.
There are a medley of cultural reasons for this, but broadly speaking there are some very big reasons we have shit like the Marvel movie universe and a focus on superheroes, superhumans, and the like and not super-powerful humanoid machines. I won't get into it, except to say frankly I'm kind of glad it's this way.
