One possibility is that much like how in the birthday present incident or with Paulo’s rejection, Vera realized she was making Lucy too petty and cruel and in order to maintain the “always right” narrative she wrote or outright rewrote the events in such a manner so that Lucy was in the right while doing clearly manipulative or bad things.
Could you imagine if Lucy tore into mike after his confession like he did back in December? Vera would have absolutely no way of writing the story without in some way dealing with the fallout or hypocrisy of Lucy’s actions, and mike’s ensuing actions (like say attempting suicide) would make him the sympathetic one.
So instead we’re getting the “nice Lucy” breakup, where similar to what happened with paulo, Lucy “gently” tears the guy’s heart out in a manner that puts her in the right and negates all the shitty things she did or is currently doing.
Vera wants to have Lucy and mike still be a possibility without them actually being a thing, give Lucy the win without making her the bad guy, put mike closer to redemption while still being pathetic and being only salvageable through Lucy’s actions rather than his own, and above all else still have Lucy be in the right.
The amount of mental gymnastics this lady goes through just to keep her narrative going are truly astounding.
