The Hares are the middle classes, working under the great and hereditary Badger Lords.
Like Tolkien, the vermin represent not so much the lower classes (who are examined as humble and rustic), but those who would use violence rather than work hard for their livelihood.
The Vermin are not the lower classes, or dark skinned people, as some have suggested, but any who would threaten the peaceful way of life. Any criminal or warlord.
If any represent a different race, I think it is the birds, who often have moralities and thoughts completely alien to the woodlanders, but are not treated as morally inferior because of it.
