I remembered that a lot of the overarching plot development was crammed into season 2 but I didn't recall that it was almost all specifically in the second half of season 2. It seems pretty clear that originally the Ford reveal was going to be a finale cliffhanger with a full season taking place after it for all the future developments which would have given them a lot more time to breathe.
