>>123775595Sitting in development hell for so long is never a good sign, but as soon as it was clear Disney made Father Fowl into a good guy, and Artemis' journey righteous from the start, I completely tuned out. Artemis, and the series overall, is memorable for the evolution of this emotionally stunted, arrogant child, into a character who recognizes compassion and empathy for his fellow human /fairyisn't a detriment to his abilities, but rather a vast improvement on how he previously lived his life and viewed the world. Removing any chance of that development kills the spirit of the series, and renders the property into just another non-starter for Disney's roster of franchises.
That's the consistent bizarreness about these "failed" adaptions though, it's the very nature of their uniqueness that turned them into the type of successful properties Disney would want to capitalize upon, and yet when they are finally given the chance to do so, their first instinct seems to always be to sublimate the property into something people already recognize, which by it's very definition rids it of that appeal that attracted them to the value of the property in the first place. If I have to chalk it up to anything, I'd say it's a consequences of one executive, or group of executives, acquiring the rights to a property, but then the execution of the project is assigned to another group, possibly after several years and corporate restructurings have already passed, and now no one knows what to do with it.
TL; DR - Disney can't stop fucking up what is handed to them on a golden platter, but that original trilogy of books is so good, and deserves so much better.
