>>123523556Honestly, that makes it all the better for me.
Just imagine it. The Night is defeated but not killed. Everyone gathered knows that, in time, it'll grow back to its full power if they don't stop it here and all the girls know that the only way to do it is to sacrifice themselves.
All the girls have something to fight for at this point, some reason to put their lives down, so they don't complain. They're scared, but they're not about to cowards and run away. Anne says her goodbyes to the Plantars, Sasha says her goodbyes to Grime, Marcy writes a quick letter to her mom, etc.
The gems are in front of them. With a shaking hand, Anne reaches out to grab hers, fully aware that this is it. This is where she dies. And before it happens, Hop Pop grabs her arm and pulls her down. He argues that he's old, and he's done everything he needs to, and it's time to redeem himself for hiding the box. So he grabs the gem.
Then Sasha takes a deep breath, not about to be outdone by a filthy frog. Deep down, she's relieved that Anne at least will get to keep living in the world she saves as she lunges for the gem, wasting no time. Only instead, her hand wraps around the edge of Grime's sword as he ripostes her down onto her knees. This is his gem now. Some small redemption for his past actions, for all the times he led Sasha astray. So his hand grabs the gem too.
And then Marcy reaches out. And every second feels like an hour as she inches closer. In the back of her mind, her rational side is telling her to stop but she pushes through it anyway. And she gets closer and closer to her gem, and she realizes it. That nobody is going to stop her. Not Olivia, not Yunan; there's nobody who loves her enough to take this burden from her. And her hand keeps getting closer, and the weight in her stomach grows, until finally, she
stops as Anne and Sasha grab her hand. They go together, as friends.
