The purpose of gore and violence is shock value, and in this case, the shock was diegetic.
It wasn't only "wow the viewers will never expect how cool and mature our show is", it's "the characters in universe didn't expect Omniman to go crazy and murderous"
You are being shocked, but in the same way that the characters in the show are feeling.
In a similar way the only nude/sex scenes I've ever liked in movies are in Starship Troopers. There is one naked scene that happens during a moment of fraternization between troops, and it's completely desexualized - no longing glances and female curves, or suggestive pandowns of bulky males, just a bunch of naked people in the showers.
Then later, there is a proper sex scenes involving the main character, following a particularly exciting moment of triumph, feeling rewarding for both the characters and the viewer.
