>>123129947>Scorpion's just one of those guys who doesn't really have anything going for him as a character. He actually has a lot going for him, but a lot of writers ignore it.
First and foremost, Scorpion is (or was) one of the few villains that Spider-Man gets to genuinely slug it out with. No lasers, no tentacles with a soft center, no sand, no gooey Symbiote. Their fights tends to have really great material attached because Peter is the underdog. Mac is stronger, faster, and takes a punch like very few of Peter’s enemies can. When used properly, it showcases Peter’s ability to improvise and work his way out of touch situations. There’s a couple of issues that end with Peter roughed up but victorious over Mac, and it’s satisfying. Not every villain needs to want world domination or IT WAS ME PETER to display some form of challenge to Spidey. Mac goes back to an old fashioned bully-styled villain that Pete has to dig deep to beat. Mac is also unrelenting with a shocking amount of willpower. Peter’s commented many times before that the only way to beat Mac is to knock him out cold, otherwise he’ll keep coming. There’s a lot there to explore there and emphasize on to make Mac a threat. He’s not the mastermind, but he’s the obstacle.
Also, Mac has a lot of potential as a reverse to Spider-Man. Peter’s powers were by accident, whereas Mac’s were intentional. Mac is also the absolute reverse of Peter’s responsibility credo. He has no sense of responsibility to anyone, and simply does anything he feels like which can range from fucking with JJ to helping a shady organization almost destroy New York.
Either way, suddenly making him a chump after a history of giving Peter some of his hardest fights isn’t the way to go.
