People who think this shit was universally beloved back then has an extremely selective memory. Plenty of people pointed out the sloppy and hacky writing, the shallow Hollywood spectacle, the cheap and gratuitous gore, the embarrassing self-serious, gritty tone, etc.
It's a Hollywood movie in the worst sense - bludgeon the audience with enough empty spectacle that they don't notice all the holes or nasty parts. And worse, the cynical, nasty streak that ran through the event ended up influencing DC even now.
It's always funny to see people whining about how Scott Snyder and Tom King are ruining the DC universe, when they're pulling the exact shit Johns did (hell, King and Johns even did the same accidental mass murderer superhero shit). The Snyder and King fans you guys hate so much find their stuff as much "fun" and "epic" as people defend IC as.
