I generally think male characters are more likely to be called "three dimensional" because men in general are so flat / boring / indistinguishable / dead inside in real life that you add a little bit of emotionality to a guy and he suddenly appears more rounded (inb4 reeee)
However, women have more scope and are broader and you can have an easier time making any random person a female than you have as male
