I can't think of any reason to have the chest split down the middle, but batman needs to be able to throw a punch, he'll have to have full control of his abdominal rotations, and contraction and that means it would have to be split into many pieces. I assuming the in-between is barely armor and flexes easy, so I don't see why he wouldn't be able to do a crunch in that.
I don't really know what half the material he has on his body is, so I can't say a whole lot, but it looks more than reasonable to me.
What I can say for sure is that his legs are barely protected compared to his upper body, so he is prioritizing mobility over, being able to take any many blows as possible.
When designing a superhero how cool they look should always come before how practical it is, The Flash looks way better imo in the show than he does in Justice League, but if I had to wear one of the suits myself, I'd take the one with armor on it/
