The Golden Age of 2D was the late 30s-early 60s, the Renaissance Era was the 90s. I'll argue that CG definitely broke into that "Golden Age" around 2008-2011:
>Pixar starts pouring more money into their films, each film they make pushes CG tech further and further
>Disney spent a lot of time in R&D to make Tangled look good
>Dreamworks wowed everyone with HTTYD's 3D, their growth from 2010 to 2013 is staggering
>Illumination broke into the game and filtered cheaper studios like Imagi or Vanguard by setting the quality CG barrier of entry
>SPA used Cloudy and Hotel Transylvania to experiment with cartoonier CG techniques
>Tintin and Rango are fantastic mo-cap and photorealistic CG films that would've been unfeasable years ago
>Shows like Fanboy and Chum Chum prove that cartoony, inexpensive CG can look decent without heavy compromise
I personally think there's still a ways to go before the medium peaks artistically, films like Spider-Verse and Soul are only scratching the surface of what CG can achieve creatively. In the next ten years we're probably going to see an "avant-garde" CG boom akin to UPA in the 50s. I feel like the 90s-00s was closer to the Silent Age of animation. Blue Sky was like the Fleischer of that time.

At the very least the film was a nice change of pace for DWA. For a while they were pigeonholed into doing comedies and genre parodies. Neither approach is bad but I'd argue that 2010-2013 was one of their higher creative peaks.

Making expensive CG films at the time was tricky because there was a higher risk associated with getting the technology looking presentable. Films like Hoodwinked or Igor are relics of this strange "wild west" era of CG.

"Objective" might be a stretch too far. Comparing Dreamworks' best to Pixar's best is like comparing good cake to good ice cream. They're somewhat similar but they both have their own branding that sets them apart. I think a fantastic Dreamworks movie is comparable to a good Pixar movie only when it decides it wants to mimic Pixar's "brand-" their method of storytelling, their art and design, and so on.

Deserved? Of course not. No studio "deserves" to go bankrupt. They had a bunch of great ideas under their belt but they simply got too ambitious too quickly. I think they just needed a sharper business sense.

Yeah. Those types of films never really died out (Norm of the North is a fantastic example from the 2010s) but it's interesting to imagine that there was a time when "becoming the next Pixar/Dreamworks" was within the grasp of upstart animation studios everywhere. Nowadays when cheaper animation features are made, there's usually a smidge of integrity or earnesty behind them. Even if there isn't, most of them just go straight to Netflix, which is basically direct-to-DVD but with far more clout behind it.

Absolutely. After TMNT proved a modest hit, they got ambitious and hired a bunch of veterans ( Cecil Kramer, Ken Tsumura and Tim Cheung ) to oversee all their following projects. Gatchaman was supposed to be their next film, but production was a mess and Astroboy ended up being finished first. It's worth mentioning that 2008 recession also played a role in their demise

I do know that Astroboy got overhauled in january 2008 after the original director got fired and that brit from Aardman took over. Shame there isn't much footage or pics of that early version made in 2007

The film was on and off in development from around 2005-2009. They were aiming for 2007 but shifted the release due to a lengthy production. They supposedly cancelled the film proper in 2009 after running out of funding to complete the film and sold the assets in 2010. Some boards and early release footage have floated around since then but nothing concrete has came of it since.

If I had to guess it was simply a case of good networking. It's not unlikely to imagine that an executive at Imagi enjoyed his previous work and offered him the gig. He has a screen credit so I'm sure he offered enough to the final script, but by this point it's just speculation.

Well I don't work for or represent Imagi in any form or capacity. I'm sure if I asked the right person they could find someone else to give you an anecdote, but I don't know anybody related to the production of Imagi's Astro Boy.

I see. Nice talking to you anyway. Astroboy is one of my fav non mainstream CG films ever, so any info about it is appreciated. I'm glad it got finished over Gatchaman, which seemed like it was going to be a very action heavy film with no substance. That film's production must've been a mess if it was taking them so long

An abrupt ending isn't always cause for a film having a rushed production. In egregious cases it's usually just a sign that the script has either been heavily reworked or not worked on enough. If this interview says that production froze for a month though then I see no reason not to believe it.

I'm sure it was. When a studio starts making rough business decisions, the artists usually suffer as a result of it. A studio like Imagi would've had better luck surviving in a post-Netflix world, but as an early CG adopter they took the risks, they ran with them, and they managed to get two decent films out of it.

Like I said, I'm not sure. I'm sure the idea was considered at one point, what with Astro Boy being based on an iconic franchise and all, but the box-office returns and financial woes definitely put a damper on that.

Harris probably wrote most of the script and Bowers then gave it a small revision or polish. Bowers never wrote anything before while Harris was a seasoned writer and author, so the script must've been mostly Harris' work ( him being credited first proves this )
